Notch Passes the Minecraft Torch

The Word of Notch announces that Markus 'Notch' Persson is stepping down as lead developer on Minecraft:

As of yesterday, Jens Bergensten is the new lead developer on Minecraft. He will have the final say in all design decisions, so he will kinda sorta become my boss, I guess. Iíve promised him to not pull rank. ;)

Weíve been working together on Minecraft for a year now, and Iím amazed at how much in synch we two are when it comes to how to design the game. And when we donít agree, we discuss it and something much better comes out at a result. Heís truly a great person to work with, and I feel very confident handing over the leadership of Minecraft to him.

If you want to contact Jens, heís on twitter as @jeb_, or you can email him at jeb@mojang.com

Personally, I will now rest for a while, then get back to work refreshed and eager. Iíll be helping out with Minecraft, of course, but also starting work on some new project.

Maybe us modders can get some support now?!? I like Jeb, he is responsive and his coding skills are superb.

I'm relieved to hear this.

I appreciate what Notch has done thus far, but Jeb has demonstrated a much more steady hand these past few months both in the public domain and in the coding domain. Given the long laundry list of bug fixes that still need to be ironed out, I'd rather see Jeb calling the shots now that the product is no longer deemed to be beta. More work, less drama.

Corporate taxes are also lower than personal taxes in Sweden.

If I'd gotten rich off a pet project I'd retire too. Or take a break or whatever.

However I've realized the reason people like him succeed has much to do with the fact that their goal is not to retire, like mine, but to make things. Which is why they tend not to retire despite the money.

It's about time, he's been splitting his time and running around the world with his newfound fame, and trying to get another game going, he's not really focusing his efforts on the game right now anyway (he even said he "forgot" to put some stuff in the release version). The game will likely be better off this way. I imagine that he's been planning this for a while, but wanted to get minecraft released first.

No, if he was going to do that, he would have sold the company for millions to a big publisher when he hit it big, and started a new company (or just retired). Instead, he chose to take the money he made, pump it back into the company, expand the company, lease an HQ, and hire a bunch of ppl. All that was a waste of money if he was planning to sell out. And while the money would have made him a moderately well off man if he kept it and sold the company, its NOT nearly that much when you are starting up a decent size game company with multiple projects going at once.

Thats a bit uncalled for.

That's just how SC rolls. He (Notch) made something cool and got compensated for it, he's moving onto something new. I don't see the problem with him going onto a different project, I wouldn't want to work on the same thing forever either.

Hes not abandoning it ether, hes still going to do work on it in addition to his new project, its just he wont be the lead man anymore.

I'm not worried. I'm glad Notch will be getting a much deserved break and am confident Minecraft is in the right hands.
