Well, I think that the 4X genre in general has been a sequence of really good hits (GalCiv2, Distant Worlds, MOO, Star Trek: Birth of the Federation) and absolutely soul-crushing disasters (Sword of the Stars 2, MOO3)...Since Stardock seems content on not going forward with the GalCiv series any time soon (unfortunately), I think this might have some promise. IF it gets out of the Star Ruler mold of working with little to nothing and grabs onto a publisher willing to give it the resources such a game needs. I mean, Star Ruler was ok, but it needed funds for development and a dedicated publisher to hold it's hand. As it is, it needs some more work. SotS2 will go down as an example of what NOT to do. Sins of a Solar Empire was good and still has mods coming out regularly but it can't really be considered in the traditional 4X framework. Which leaves GalCiv and Distant Worlds. Both are excellent. GalCiv is more 'casual' to DW's 'everything including the kitchen sink' model....
Imagine, for a second, a title, as deep and detailed as Distant Worlds, as engaging and easy to use as GalCiv2 and as customizable and tactical as an FPS or shooter...You do the whole strategic angle and then during battles or exploration, you take control of a certain ship (like the flagship of a fleet, RTS-style) or get down into the boots of a general or soldier Battlefield 2-style. Now THAT is a game I would gladly pay out of the ass for! And I think computing power has come around lately to be able to handle such a title, assuming the right developer can be brought on-board with a publisher's FULL support...SO LETS GET TO IT! I've been waiting 20+ years for such a thing and I seriously doubt I'm the only one!
