1M CoD Elite Premium Subscribers

Though the delayed PC edition of Call of Duty Elite will be free, the console edition of the service has a premium component, and Activision announces that more than one million players have purchased premium subscriptions to the service in six days, noting it took approximately one year for services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Sirius XM, and Xbox LIVE to achieve similar penetration. "The audience response to Call of Duty Elite's premium service has been beyond our expectations, and we want to thank Call of Duty players around the world for their unprecedented enthusiasm," said Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard. "The number of gamers who have registered for Call of Duty Elite further illustrates how this service is poised to redefine social gaming and set a new bar for interactive entertainment." They also note that founding members will be receiving an additional 30 days on their subscriptions as compensation for suffering through Elite's growing pains. Here are some numbers on Elite's launch:
Since Call of Duty Elite's launch on November 8, more than four million gamers have already registered for the new online service overall. Additionally, more than 80,000 Elite clans have been created, 100,000 user-generated videos have been uploaded to Call of Duty Elite and the service has had more than three million daily logins.

We may hate him but this is a man who can sell snow to an Eskimo!

Something tells me though that even if Elite is free on pc you will still have to pay a premium for the DLC.

contemplate how many of these million bought the hardened edition which came with elite and all the dlc and was a pretty fair deal for most gamers.

How much did it cost, and how is it a "fair deal"? I'd like to understand how these people are not just volunteering themselves to be nickled and dimed to extraordinary, epic lengths.

Regular edition is $60, hardened is $100. If you're one of those people that KNOWS they're going to like the game and knows they're going to buy all the DLC, then as long as they ship 3 DLC packs in a year (I believe they're currently running about 4 per year and were planning on doing more this time around), then you've saved some cash and gotten access to all the functions of elite for a year. Even if you don't resubscribe next year, you keep the DLC that was released while you were a subscriber.

I didn't buy the game, so I still have some questions. I remember them mentioning that it was going to be useable in Black Ops and MW3 and future titles, so my question is, if I were a subscriber, do I get DLC for both games for free? Or just the current one? Presumably you only get it for free if it's released while you're a subscriber, and since I suspect Black ops DLC is done with now that MW3 is out, then I guess it's not an issue, but it's an interesting question to me nonetheless.

I suspect the number of actual, intentional subscribers is a tiny fraction of the total number of "subscribers". Everyone else probably got the subscription through the "hardened" pack, buying it for the DLC and getting the subscription to boot. That they had a million subs in six days suggests as much. The numbers for the subs and for the Hardened edition probably are pretty similar.

I would say let's see what player retention is like in a year but they'll have another CoD game out and another bundle, so it'll be questionable how effective Elite is actually going to be.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Battlefield did this for free. Halo: Reach did this for free. What are the odds the next game to come out starts charging now, too?

People paying something for nothing is an epic fail, just not the kind you're thinking. I'm sure someone will drop a turd about DLC but most of these people are likely just buying something because it has the call of duty name on it. A society of brandwhores is what we have become.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Though, I guess it's not SO bad due to people buying Hardened editions, but it's still a god-awful service and terrible game (compared to previous games).
