Skyrim Arrives

The Bethesda Blog marks today's release of The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim, the RPG sequel so highly anticipated that they need not even mention its name:
Today’s the big day! To help celebrate the occasion, IGN got artist Bashir Sultani to pay tribute to the game with salt art. Awesome stuff!

From everyone at Bethesda, we hope you enjoy the game as much as we did making it. Have a great weekend playing!
PC Gamer offers a guide on tweaks for the PC edition to improve graphics, disable Vsync, change FOV, and more and HARDOCP has a performance and IQ preview.

They've really dumbed down the game for broader audience appeal unfortunately. The flavour is still great but this is very much RPG-lite.

Most urgent mods in my eyes:

Dark Mod - night time wilderness and dungeons have too high an ambient light level for sure. Portable light sources and magic seem to have no use currently.

Primary Needs Mod - for hunger at the very least. The food is barely worth it at the moment as Creston said, just a tiny HP gain. There are food sources all over towns and the wilderness, making you think about food supplies makes all the inns and cooking skills have a purpose.

Drop Rate Mod - you seem to get showered with treasure right from the earliest levels. +50% mana regen here, +25% cold resist there, they come way too fast. (Also there should be more variety and partial forms of gems, that mod for oblivion that gave you all the gem fragments that you could grind down for alchemy was great).

Anyhow, I can't believe the most urgent things are gameplay tweaks! I really thought it would be a case of needing game breaking bug fixes at first. I know some issues are out there but the game's definitely in an acceptable initial state for me which feels like a miracle these days. I'm not a religeous man but when this was decrypting I was thinking please... God... don't let this game be shit!

Cres, wth did you get "Khajit Murderous Claw of Ruinous Death"? I want fist weaps for my cat!!!

I've seen some really neat stuff just riding around so far. Best is I came across a giant and a dragon having a fight. Giant killed the dragon pretty easily which I don't agree with. I don't like the giants - which aren't all that giant - are so uber and dragons are wusses by comparison.

Love the speed shout. Makes me feel like Speedy Gonzales!

Anyone know where to get some quicksilver? Need some for elven armor.

Anyone else playing conjurer? Was trying to be a dragon rider type guy so I took the "control animals" race (wood elf). Once in the game I see that the spell can only be fired once a day. (WTF?!) Closest thing I could find is conjurer. I can make zombies, from dead bodies, summon something called a familiar and most recently I'm able to summon some crazy flaming woman that shoots fire balls! I tried casting the zombie spell on a dead giant and the game said he was too powerful for that spell. I have the reanimate corpse spell now so I need to go back and try and see if I can get that guy on my side... Just wish they lasted a bit longer :). 60 seconds and they turn to dust.

I'm loving conjurer so far. Need to see if that once a day control animal spell works on dragons...then I shall RIDE THE DRAGON!

Not a problem. You're now futher in the game than I am. :p I got terribly side-tracked.

Spoilierish: If you're still in barrows and haven't gone to the Jarl, then it won't tell you what to do with it. It'll be picked up later on in the main questline.

Anyone figured out yet how to cook food? I've got tons of raw stuff, but can't seem to cook it anywhere. Tried all kinds of fires, while holding all kinds of pans and kettles, and nada...

If you come across a cooking fire with a pot that looks like it has some sort of 'liquid' in it, that should be the cooking pot and allow you to cook. First one I came across was in the bandit camp that you're sent to for the bounty after you talk to the Jarl.

Just as you typed this, I found one. Thanks though

Edit : Ah, the cookpot in Gerud's house does it. I still don't really see the point of food. The best items heal 10 hitpoints. Woot?

I'm beginning to think they may have gone a bit too far into the other direction with Archery, to be honest. I'm killing almost everything in a few shots...

Love the Khajit's claws. Flame spell in one hand and the Khajit Murderous Claw of Ruinous Death in the other makes short work of most things.

Even though mods and potentially higher res textures on the PC version is nice, honestly I'd rather have the console (360) version. The reasons are: play on a big LED HDTV (60"+), theater style rocking surround sound system, and sit on a comfortable couch/recliner.

Plus its made for the console, controls better and wont crash constantly like reports going out about the PC version. So of course you are making the better choice.

Yep, my 0 crashes in 10 hours of play is really putting a damper on my enjoyment. Damn unreliable PC versions.

Oh it's very very nice. There needs to be some mod work with the UI, and there are a few bugs. But compared to the problems in morrowind and oblivion? This is pretty damn nice so far. Nice enough that I deleted my first character to reroll a second.

Night shot for anyone interested, but I think the worldspace group needs to be tweaked a bit to make it darker. Should be easy enough to fix once we get the toolset.

Thanks much for the info, I appreciate it. I played Oblivion, but it lost my interest after not too long; I don't know if was the fact that I wasn't a big enough RPG-FPS fan at the time, or if there wasn't enough game content to keep my interested. It sounds like Skyrim may be a lot different/better in that respect. The Skyrim world does look amazing....

Have fun....

Anyone know how to dual wield with favourites? You can do it with spells, but I can't dual wield weapons without having to go into my inventory and doing it and it's frustrating.

With the pad, it's the same as in the inventory. Left-trigger on one weapon, right-trigger on the other.

Ahh I figureed it out. It seems to be a bug that you can't do it with 2 items of the same name but different items work fine. And destruction is good, particularly flame vs. undead.

You can do it with 2 items of the same name. I've been dual wielding the same axes since Bleak Falls Barrow. It's the same as Crustacean said, just equip one with RT, then hit LT again to equip the other.

If done successfully it should say "LR" next to the item.

I think he's talking about doing it with hotkeys/favorites, not from the items menu.

Cutter, just dbl click the hotkey. That should dual-wield it.

Ya know. The console version can't compare, not a chance in hell. With the tweaks it's even better. I was out in western canada about a month ago. The mountains in skyrim are damn near reminiscent of the ones in banff national park.

I might need to tweak the FoV a bit more but at 90 it's pretty good at 1920x1080

NICE! I may have to pick this up. ????

Tons of games work great in 3D (pretty much all rpg's with 3D graphics), and people are uber-happy over how well 3D works in Skyrim over on the 3D Vision forum. Especially considering there was no official support.

I'm picking up the game next week, otherwise Id comment on how good it is.
