RAGE PC Texture Fix Coming

John Carmack tweets about plans for a new texture option in the upcoming patch for the Windows PC edition" of RAGE, id's new first person shooter: "We have a bicubic-upsample+detail texture option for the next PC patch that will help alleviate the blurry textures in Rage." A follow up tweet offers more on this: "@DesignerDon our first test of a higher res page file didn't help much, because most source textures didn't actually have any more detail."

I just finished RAGE, was about a ~15 hour game for me. I'm feeling pretty meh about it regardless of the graphics fiasco (doom3's shadows are better, lack of skin detail on models, under delivery over promised etc).

Long story short I don't care about rage or doom 4 anymore, they can patch till they blue in the face..., its too late they made a average game.

Time to move on to metro last light, hopefully it will be the realization of what we wanted.

It probably depends on the engine.. but if its a fully dynamic shadow system with GI the textures need to come last simply because the texture shaders need to know when they are in "shadow" or in "light" and what color the light has.

They can't know that if they are rendered before the light.

How exactly frostbite 2 creates the GI and color probes though would be very interesting to know in detail..

Rage by the way is not even on the same level of technology as frostbite 2, its like comparing a rubber dingy to a nuclear sub. ;p

This is something I don't understand. I've been reading a lot of similar comments. I played it on GTX460, and actually tried to force vsync OFF via nvidia settings, so that the menu / inventory mouse wouldn't lag so much. Didn't help, but I in return I got some tearing. But by using the 3D application settings, there was zero tearing, as if the game had a forced vsync on all the time.

with deferred shading rendering a scene is a 3 pass affair - geometry, light, textures - in that order.

Really? I would have thought light would be last.

And no amount of upscale magic will fix any of these issues, and detail textures only work if you have detail to add - things like the blurry phones or vending machines don't just need detail textures, they need full high-res textures!

And I was bashed for saying id hasn't been relevant since Doom 3.

The lack of real AA is not because of performance reasons, with deferred shading rendering a scene is a 3 pass affair - geometry, light, textures - in that order.

AA can only be applied after pass 2 but it doesn't work right as pass 2 has no info about pass 1 - you'd have to render out the first 2 passes seperately to create AA, and then render pass 3 and layer it over, it'd be a total performance killer.

Now the ACTUAL reason for the lack of real AA is simply that the engines need to be full DX10.1 conform to allow for "real" AA again. Because DX10.1 allows for proper AA.

Most games can't do that, only games that are 100% DX10 only can, like BF3 for example.

So by the way, thats the reason BF3 doesn't support XP

If this is a texture pack, it is going to be a huuuuuuuge patch. If not, it's not going to make a lot of difference.

Whatever you're smoking, I want some. Must be some good stuff.

2xAA has pretty much always been (relatively) low performance cost to implement, but I remember a decade ago 4xAA was more or less killing video cards.

Also remember - the more complex the scene, the more work there is for AA to do. Back in the day, when there wasn't as much detail, AA was relatively trivial compared to what it is now. And even then it ran slow as molasses.

The game is already 20gigs, I can't imagine what a texture patch would come in at.

If they're just tweaking a graphic setting then I don't think it'll really fix anything, as long as your not standing around looking at textures on paint cans then it's not that big of a problem.

I'm pretty sure that with regards to vsync you want to either enable it through your game or through the graphics control panel, not both.

rageConfig.cfg goes in your Steam\steamapps\common\rage\base

seta r_swapInterval 1 //VSYNC 1 enabled, 0 diabled

that's the optoin to enable vsync.

sucks that you can't free roam after finishing it but when you go back into areas that aren't part of your mission they're completely void of enemies to kill.

i still get ridiculous amount of screen tearing in this game.. and not on any other games ive been playing on my new machine

i suspect it has something to do with the way they implement the framecap and working the game for a 60hz refresh rate on TVs.. but what is weird is that my monitor is already set to 60hz - but somehow its not happy

ive forced vsync in the nvidia panel, ive switched it to every vsync mode they have in rage.. nothing fixes it

If you're using the recommended beta drivers make sure you go into "Program settings" under "Manage 3D settings", not just "Global settings". In Program Settings uncheck "show only programs found on the computer" and you'll see two Rage entries. Change them both to Use Global Setting under vertical sync and the tearing will stop if you have vsync "on" in the game. I know it's retarded they didn't catch this in beta testing the driver, but what can you do.

What kills me is we are losing the pillars of great 3d visuals.

To me the first two in 3d after frame rate were and really still are:

Texture clarity
AA

AA's been under attack for a while, I like how many years ago we'd have nearly free 4xAA and that is all I ever needed. No we have these new methods, they aren't as clean and most clobber frames.

And Now blurry textures.

Golf Clap.

the texture "pop-in" is horrific. I'm somewhat surprised that Carmack allowed the game to ship with that level of visual issues.

I was more disappointed with Carmack's flippant attitude towards the PC version than I was by any of the negative reviews RAGE got. The technical issues will eventually be worked out, but John's view of the PC market, when he is one of the virtual pioneers of PC gaming, is disheartening.

Sure, I expect that anyone would want to make a console version of their game because they invariably sell the best, but his unprofessional attitude towards the PC gaming market is so dismissive that he has a lot of us long time PC gamers wondering if he, the father of the FPS, is even relevant to us any longer.

Dude, its a new engine. Of course they are going to have to figure things out as they go. But anything released after wards should be golden. Texture issues aside, this is still a great game. I loved every min of it. Going to go through it again on Nightmare mode.

Well at least they're fixing it, hopefully at some point it will actually meet the original (reasonable) expectations people had for it. Though first impressions mean a lot, so they'd have to do a lot to fix its tarnished reputation in the minds of gamers.

I wouldn't mind picking this up in a GotY edition for ~$40 in a years time.

and its a weird kind of tearing, where you just barely have to move to see it.. its almost like there is a band of output that just doesnt line up with everything else.. really annoying and weird looking - total deal breaker, makes it unplayable

been playing witcher 2 and it looks like pure awesome.. same with the BF3 beta...

i dont get it, id.. oh how the mighty have fallen
