RAGE Reviews - PC Users Raging - ATI RAGE Drivers

Today is the North American release date for RAGE, and the game is now unlocked in some territories on Steam. Reviews are also popping up. You can read about id's new first-person shooter on AtomicGamer, AZ Central, Computer and Video Games, Destructoid, Edge Magazine, Eurogamer, gamesTM, GameTrailers, guardian.co.uk, IGN, IncGamers, Joystiq, PC Gamer, and Strategy Informer. There also seems to be quite an uproar among some PC gamers, there's a lengthy thread on reddit saying "The PC Steam version of RAGE is riddled with graphical problems and bugs!" pointing to complaint threads on the Steam forums here and here as well as on the Bethesda forums. Another large reddit thread is titled "RAGE - We need to fix this problem," and another on the topic of the game seeming like a console port, pointing to this Steam Users' Forums thread saying the game requirements have changed: "Minimum: XBOX360 or PS3 - Recommended: XBOX360 or PS3." Finally, AnandTech points the way to a new AMD Catalyst - Rage Performance Driver.

Why do game designers have to cater for every choice under the sun when it's their baby!

The issue is that none of this really applies to your argument. If a game developer wants to force a yellow tint, or if they want bloom, I agree they should be able to force it. It's their presentation.

But you're arguing against varying parts of presentation. Obviously id doesn't care what shadows you have as the game will choose different shadows based upon computer power. So why not put that in the hands of power users? As best as I know it's a simple check box, as the game can do it either way. Again, this isn't like forcing bloom, as some games are designed around such features and look ridiculous without it as no one ever intended to see it without that feature.

This is less like a movie director telling you that you have to watch his cut and more like a movie director telling you that due to the size of your living room you're not allowed to watch the movie on anything larger than a 37" tv.
