Star Wars: The Old Republic December Launch; Pricing Details

The official website for Star Wars: The Old Republic announces BioWare's Star Wars MMORPG will launch on December 20, 2011 in North America, and on December 22nd in Europe, noting that those who preorder the game and register on the website will be eligible for early game access. "This is an incredible moment for everyone at BioWare and our partners at LucasArts who have dedicated their lives to build this extraordinary game," says BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka. "We appreciate the patience from the millions of fans who have been waiting for the game’s release." The game comes with a 30 day subscription, and they outline the fees that are required to play after that:

  • 1 Month Subscription: $14.99 (£8.99/€12.99)
  • 3 Month Subscription: $13.99 per month (one-time charge of $41.97/£25.17/€35.97)
  • 6 Month Subscription: $12.99 per month (one-time charge of $77.94/£46.14/€65.94

Well... if you only play for a month... your not paying a fee because the first 30 days is usually built into the game cost... and technically you're not really playing what an MMO is intended to be... which is an online community "copy" of a table-top RPG community. - Meaning they're intended to be played way more than a month.

Unfortunately, the genre is so stale, that a month or two is about all most people can stand, anymore. Nowadays, most modern MMOs see a huge surge when they launch, then quickly lose a large majority of their player base... usually in under 6 months... some even quicker (aka flops) because the game is in such a poor state when it launches. Even the fairly recent and semi-successful ones like Rift and Aion are hurting. They definitely don't have the retention that MMO's launched 10 years ago, had.

It's sad... but it's also what happens when tons of companies try to get on the "me too" bandwagon... and don't really try to do anything innovative.
