The people complaining about a constant internet connection to play Diablo 3 must not have played Diablo 2 online, the game suffered from rampart cheating, hacks, and exploits. If requiring a constant internet connection prevents these problems from plaguing Diablo 3, then sign me up!
This.
To each his own I guess, but I don't really understand people getting upset about this. This is exactly like Diablo II closed BNet play. You couldn't pause, you couldn't save when you wanted, you were disconnected a lot because of either your connection or the server's. You were logged out after a certain idle time, first back to the Battle.net lobby and after another timeout completely from the game.
I played Diablo II for a very long time. Years, actually. But I played only with friends in closed Battle.net, as every other thing was completely pointless. Diablo is a competitive game, not in a way that you have to beat other players in duels, but you actually want to be
better
or have better equipment... the usual pychological stuff
At any time you want to share your stuff, your chars with a friend, or you want to play with a friend spontantously, which is not possible without a network service.
I simply don't get the point to play such a game alone in isolated single player, for me it makes no sense and what's worse,
no fun at all. That's the problem with the old Torchlight. It's extreme fun for ~10 hours, even longer, but then it's basically over. With multiplayer, that's a whole other point. You find items, buy/sell them at the auction house, find something cool for a friend, then you start playing again... this is no single player game, really. It's not meant to be single player
Haters gonna hate, or tl;dr: I welcome the always on scheme for Diablo III, it's basically an improved Diablo II Battle.net, which was still vulnerable. So I hope the worst killers of Diablo II, namely the cheating/duping/PKing and bugs, will be eliminated... a few disconnects during playing, I'm used to that a lot from Diablo II. Everything so far about Diablo III sounds awesome, I really really want it NOW.
