Activision: Call of Duty Elite "The Difference Between Social Gaming and a Community"

There's an article about Call of Duty Elite on Gamasutra based on discussing the upcoming Call of Duty multiplayer service with Activision digital VP Jamie Berger during the recent Call of Duty XP event. Much of this covers the justification for charging for a premium multiplayer service, as Jamie notes the audience is "very justifiably leery of these changes as something that's not intended to make the experience any better, but is simply to make them pay more for it. There's a lot of natural cynicism and we understand that." Besides access to all the game's DLC, he explains an advantage a premium $49.99 annual subscription will provide is insulation from the notorious hostility found in multiplayer play. "One of the most interesting things to me is how positive people are in the service. I'm most excited that within it, people are being supportive; they're actually talking to each other, and amongst each other," he says. "They're so happy to actually have a place to be part of a community, not a message board... they're actually behaving very much like people who just want to be social and have fun, not people who want to flame each other." He explains this seems to be more of a community: "It creates a social contract. How can we start behaving as if we live in a neighborhood? You try to treat your neighbors with respect. When you create a true community, that, to me, is the difference between 'social gaming' and a community."

Too bad MW DLC is always just multiplayer maps.
Maybe they change it for this year, and erect some avatar costumes instead as DLC for the Elite folks

The price is $50 a year for this crap??
I musta missed where they announced the price.

Includes all the DLC, which is probably in that ballpark price, so if you buy the DLC this is great for you. If it gives stats even half what UT did it's great for you.

Too bad MW DLC is always just multiplayer maps.

What are they going to do to stop the rampant cheating and hacking on the PC version? Now that they plan on offering real prizes with their "Elite" service it's going to be a magnet for people who cheat.

Hopefully it draws most of the low life scum away from Battlefield 3.

MW3 and BF3 don't give 2 craps about cheaters. They only want to sell games and a service. Neither organization has done ANYTHING to curb cheating.

funny how Nadeo has fostered a vibrant and engaged community with the Trackmania Ip and not nickle-and-dimed the fan base while making plenty of revenue.

Keep sucking that shareholder dick, guys.

gaming used to have true communites. Then the console kiddies ruined it and the publishers egged it on. Dedicated server support is a great way to begin fostering a sense of community - but you can keep the shitty subscription based message board. I will gladly chip in on clan costs - but handing over more money to a pub to play a game I bought will never fly.

I agree with your sentiment, it seems like consoles and social networks have transformed the community aspects of gaming into more closed friends lists and other things. I really like the idea of gaming with an open community so any game without dedicated servers is a tough sell. That being said, this game looks like it will support both so *shrug*.

OMG! They are going to <something awful>!! I can remember when gaming was <nostalgic comment>. Those were the good old days. I won't buy <game title> from <publisher>. <Publisher Rep> is such a <vulgar label>! <Rival publisher> would never do this, they care about their customers. I'll just buy it used from <Store that sells used games> and not give them any of my money. Assholes.

<something awful>: If we put up with it, we make it acceptable.
<nostalgic comment>: No, it was never that good. Playing online was slow, games didn't automatically update and LPBs made the rest of us hate life.
<game title>: The next awesome game to come out.
<publisher>: The biggest publisher with the most money to throw out for the next awesome game.
<publisher rep>: The <vulgar label> who thinks <something awful> is a totally neat idea.
<vulgar label>: Use your imagination!
<rival publisher>: The 'other guys' who would screw us too, if they thought of it first.
<Store that sells used games>: The place where you will buy the game used for 10-15 USD off full retail only to discover that you need to buy some 20 USD DLC to play the game.

//End Rant

Seriously, since everyone (including myself) doesn't like these folks reaching into our pockets for more money, why do we even buy the games? Is it going to make our lives any better that we dropped 100+ hours into the game?

At some point, the amount of money that they are asking for the experience just isn't worth it anymore.

Cockbite has no idea what is really out there....we don't need a community - we already have many. They are called gaming communities, setup on the internet with members, structure, etc. Some even call them Clans. Something all of your games have ignored with these stupid ass in game friends lists.

What a douchebag. Acts like they are bringing something new to the gaming world.

You mean like MW3 has?

I'll believe it when I see it. Not one moment before. You know what Activision did the last time they said the same thing.

If they deliver, Mission accomplished. But I'm not holding my breath just yet.

The real sick part about this is the very thing mst people complained about were low quality servers: now just about everyone has a fat pipe and a dual-core processor; I can run 3 servers and still have enough bandwidth to play on someone else's while listening to Pandora. Definition of irony.

The above quote is some pretty hilarious pie in the sky PR talk that sounds painfully fake.

People are so excited to be a part of a community and open their wallets!!! Everything is so wonderful here and everyone is happy!!! It sounds like Kevin Butler talking about Playstation Home.

No kidding.

Obviously this guy was never the part of a gaming clan or club.

I just love how far they are willing to go to get away from the best policing that the game had: Independant dedicated servers run by individuals.

Adding carry-over XP & Perks totally fucked up the game. If they implemented them as "in-match" bonuses, and let us keep our dedicated servers, none of this crap would have happened to begin with. Sure, there would be a few asshat servers, but people would learn to avoid them.

Make no mistake, this is about the slippery slope to monetizing all aspects of gameplay.

In summary:

I'm positive there's probably more people behaving like people in the beta test.

Self selection.

If they know that the players are often a problem, the solution is to address the problem, not force people to pay even more money to be insulated from it.
