July Retail Game Sales Drop

VentureBeat has the NPD group's report on July retail videogame sales figures, showing the predicted sharp declines. Overall, sales for the month dropped 26%, which they say is the industry's worst month since 2006, though they point out: "While it may seem like the game industry is in a funk, these sales numbers reflect only retail sales. Other digital sales – including used games, rentals, online games, mobile games and social games — show constant growth." Here are some numbers for your crunching pleasure:
Total video game hardware, software, and accessory sales at retail stores were $707.7 million in July, down 26 percent from $961.3 million a year ago. Overall console video game sales (excluding PC games) were $687 million, down 20 percent from $855.3 million a year ago.

Game hardware sales were $223 million, down 29 percent from $313.8 million a year ago. And game software sales were $336.2 million, down 17 percent from $403.3 million a year ago. Accessory sales, which in earlier months this year were up thanks to strong sales of Microsoft’s Kinect motion-sensing system, were $127.8 million, down 8 percent from $183.1 million a year ago.

If you throw in the sales of PC, console and portable games, the total is $356.9 million, down 30 percent from $509.3 million a year ago. That means that PC games are also suffering pretty bad right now.

Well no shit retail was down. July was like a wasteland for gamers this year. Besides a few fun indie releases, what was there?

I don't know, I dropped a good $200 in July alone but much of that was preordering future titles(Deus Ex, Red Orchestra 2, Dead Island) I know I would want. It certainly did lack a specific marquee title though.

Other than spending too much at GoG, the last game I bought was the new Alice. There just hasn't been much released lately. Hard to see how they could even hope to keep sales up.
I wonder if he reads them, or if it's just for show.

It wouldn't have anything to do with... I dunno... the fact that NOTHING of note come out in July?

No. I didn't think so. Let's ALL release our games on 11/11/11!

(or, who knows, the fact that in large portions of the US, it was 9 billion degrees outside in July, so who knows, maybe people didn't feel like going to the game store?)

No releases = no sales, it's that simple. This is the calm before the storm though. August numbers won't be great either, but September onwards the floodgates will open up.

Maybe because not a lot of great games out in July? The latest quarter report showed the game industry UP something like 10%. Month to month don't mean much, there's wild variations.

You know what? I wonder how much the steam summer sales affected this. People spent a bunch of money in those digital sales and maybe didn't have the money left to buy retail stuff too.

Anyway, since none of it counts steam digital the numbers aren't very accurate for PC.

Edit: That prediction link? They have some good points.

The group's report also points out that there was really only one major release - NCAA Football 2012 - which they predict will come in at a measly 770,000 units.

"Otherwise, we believe there were no new releases in July that exceeded 200K units;

In July 2010 Blizzard released Starcraft II. With no comparable releases in that space this year, the PC video game number will decline by around 71 percent year-over-year.
[...]
analysts say August will be even worse due to EA's decision to delay of Madden NFL 12 to August 30.
