Tech 4 Source Release This Year

During his QuakeCon keynote, John Carmack announced plans to release the source code to id's Tech 4 engine from DOOM 3 before the end of this year. A couple of years ago an issue related to a patent conflict with Creative Labs was identified as something that could impede such a GPL release, but at the time id's Technical Director indicated if it came to that, he could fashion a workaround. Here's what Phoronix wrote about the news: "The source-code to Doom 3 is definitely to be released this year, Zenimax (the company that acquired id Software) has been supportive of the process, and he has challenged other game developers to release old source-code too. Carmack says that releasing the code really helps the development community." Thanks Ant via Slashdot.

Carmack does a good amount of gushing on Rage at the beginning.
Is it just all talks? No gameplays or anything?

Right. Chrono Trigger, Doom3 engine.

All you modders out there, get going, STAT! I expect a playable build by lunchtime tomorrow. ^^

As much as I'd love that, Square is very protective of Chrono Trigger, and tends to send Cease and Desist notices fairly quickly :-(

No. Just no. T1 and T2 had a MUCH better atmosphere, much bigger levels, many more possiblilities than T3. T3 was the console kid's version of a Thief game. Not really bad, but nothing like its predecessors.

Yeah, yeah... those damn "console kids" and their horrible ways.

Yes, to each their own StingingVelvet; a lot of people, as you say, may have liked T3:DS the best out of the series, but correct me if I am wrong, that the masses agree it was disjointed and didn't hold true to the original Thief 1 & Thief 2. I think ONE of the big disappointments for me was NO rope arrows. Additionally, and to me, it just didn't have that same immersive feel to it as the original T1 & T2. I'm a purest I guess.....or maybe a Looking Glass Studios snob.....or both.

I just thought Thief 3 did stealth mechanics better, and that's the main reason I was playing them. Also I liked the art design more (which is not really a fair comparison given the graphics improvements).

I'd say Thief 2 had a more cohesive story and ambiance. And let's face it, it's hard to top Shalebridge Cradle in ANY game. If there's one map/zone that deserves hall of fame recognition, that would be it. Best map/zone/ambience ever!

It's awesome that they keep doing this. At least one dev still remembers where they became great.

As I was joking with people, what will be the more intriguing development from this news - people trying to back-port id Tech 5 features into id Tech 4, or people trying to get Doom 3 to run on a cell phone?

I just hope some company will use the new tech engine to make another team based shooter considering how bad Wolfenstein was last year.

I might have to play with that engine for a bit. Doom 3 is becoming one of my all-time favorite games to play. The weapons and the feel of the controls...the lighting...it satisfies my FPS cravings like no other game before or since.

This is quite true. I too must confess my high admiration and appreciation of id Software's readiness to encourage modifications of their software in the early years of the industry.

I'm thrilled id will continue to release source code of their old tech when the new arrives. The contributions it makes can not be measured. The next time you play ANY game, consider one or some of the programmers who created it may have gotten their feet wet playing around with id code. Not to mention the countless others who don't get paid to make games, but will learn from the code being open.
