WoW Drops More Subs

Develop notes that the latest figures supplied by Activision Blizzard shows World of Warcraft has lost another 300,000 subscribers, saying the MMORPG now has about 11.1 million subscribers. They have Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime's comments on how they plan to reverse this trend:
"As our players have become more experienced playing World of Warcraft over many years, they have become much better and much faster at consuming content," he recently said.

"And so I think with Cataclysm they were able to consume the content faster than with previous expansions, but that's why we're working on developing more content."

Yesterday, Morhaime made clear Blizzard’s response to this trend. The company pledged to flood the game with new content as a matter of urgency.

What content? is about the only thing to be said about Cataclysm.

More of the same, just faster, and more of it, isnt what will keep people playing an mmorpg these days. Their only hope of slowing the decline of subscribers is to release truly new and innovate features and content in their game.

I recall at least 20 "patches" for WOW which drastically changed the balance of the DLC so much that everyone must have become frustrated trying to figure out the changes.

They did a ton of class changes as apart of cataclysm and after it shipped. You normally see some of that, but it seems like this time it was particularly crazy. Like they couldn't decide what they wanted to do...

As someone who played an arcane mage, I still felt like I was expected to respec to raid, due to lack of being able to cast in boss fights that had heavy movement. And that wasn't something my guild asked of me, but something that, compared to the other two specs, felt missing from arcane.

Another million or so this Holiday season. People are playing it (Wow) out of boredom due to a blah year in gaming (imo).

Skyrim = Subs getting dropped.

BF3 = Subs getting dropped.

Call of Duty (as much as i hate to say it)= subs getting dropped.

Starwars the old republic IF it goes live before Christmas = Tons of dropped subscriptions.

Personally i quit Wow due to running the same dungeons, same battle grounds over and over again that wasn't fun.

I'm not a WOW player...never had been and never will. But, it seems to me that their problem is not content but changing content. I recall at least 20 "patches" for WOW which drastically changed the balance of the DLC so much that everyone must have become frustrated trying to figure out the changes.

The other thing I noticed when I watched a friend play WOW was that the graphics have lots of high resolution art but for the most part the majority of the textures are solid colors...like toys. I think if Blizzard wants to rejuvinate their player base and turn it around then they will need to develop an entirely new look...more artsy-crafty and less toy-like...for all the levels.

An example would be to wonder how players would feel if they bought Duke Nukem Forever only to find that they have to play through the original Duke 3D games before they are allowed to have fun with the new content.

Don't forget, there's not just D3 coming up from blizzard to take subscribers. Theres also the next unnamed MMO that blizz is working on. It wouldn't surprise me at all if the only thing to ever top WoW (and topple it)... is the next MMO from blizzard. And I'm certain blizz is planning for that event.

I'll join the WoW bandwagon as soon as it goes REAL f2p. That could happen in about 5 years or so.

It's also possible that people were "consuming content faster" in Cata because there simply wasn't all that much content to it.

Blizzard kept talking during the development of Cata that the process of levelling from 80-85 would be about as time-consuming as the 1-80 process, because they wanted to make the levels "more meaningful". My brother (an admittedly die-hard WoW player) levelled all ten of his characters (one in each class) to 85 inside of the first month of Cata's release (and one of them, his Warlock, wasn't even 80 when Cata launched). He then mentioned that he had never encountered a point in WoW where he went "now what?" faster than after Cata's launch.

In other words more daily quests. Thanks Mike.

Their "content" at the highest level is repeated runs of heroic dungeons followed by repeated runs of raid dungeons interspersed with repeated completion of daily quests. For the most part, once you top out on levels you are doing the same things every day, week after week. BORING.

The game definitely has enough content, already. They need to focus on the game. Probably having PUG instance waits being @ the 20-40 min mark does not help. And then once you get there it isn't that interesting of an adventure. How about making it feel like an adventure, instead of walk 4 steps *smash**smash* *loot*loot* 4 steps *smash*smash* *loot*loot* 4 steps... I know that is the premise of the game but they've sort of milked it to the point that it actually feels like a milkshake.

There is no time to enjoy the content, because they barely give regular guilds a chance to do it before they start nerfing the difficulty and pushing a new raid out. I got severe burn out, and left. There were times in WotLK where we wouldn't even wear epic gear for a month before we were replacing it with newer stuff. There is no valley, just an unending uphill climb.

Yes, I quit the game over a year ago because the repetition became mind-numbing. Daily quests, badge collecting, rushing through instances--it became torture and I finally woke up and asked myself, Why am I doing this? When the vanilla game came out in 2004, the reason I got hooked was because it offered some adventure and spontaneity. You could travel around the world, run into people, and things would happen. That's all gone. Now all people do is stand in one spot and hit the instance que button.

The only way to win a MMO is to stop playing. Looks like 11.1 million people still need to realize this.

That is so true, blizzard sees the writing on the wall, and they don’t like what they are reading. It’s only a matter of time before they lose millions of users. No matter how much content that put in this game it will always feel that same way. There is nothing new about WOW except how boring it gets after a month of playing. I left over six months ago and so did many of my friends. We all have said the same thing, we are done with WOW!

I will also add this, with all the new content they added, blizzrd made the new addon way to difficult for many of the normal users. it pretty much drove them away from the game.

i am growing more convinced that Diablo 3 is being crafted to bring in those bored WOW subscribers. The D3 auction house screen even looks very much like the WOW auction house screen.

Interesting though I am not sure they could net me back at this point. Would require pretty drastic changes that I am not even sure I could name. Interesting to see that I wasn't the only one that burned out on Cata pretty quickly.
