From Dust DRM Also Always On?

The Steam Listing for From Dust has details on the DRM in recently delayed PC edition of the upcoming god-game. This suggests that like Driver: San Francisco, this will use Ubisoft's DRM scheme that requires a persistent internet connection while the game is being played, saying: "Ubisoft Online Service" (thanks Bumpy via DSOGaming). We reached out to THQ to confirm the details on this, but have yet to receive a response (perhaps there's a glitch with their internet connection).

Let me contribute to the thread with the generic, stock DRM comments you see in a comments section like this:

"I was interested in this game, but thanks to DRM I will avoid it" Translation: I had zero interest but just want to bitch about DRM for the sake of it

"I'm gonna buy it and crack it"
Translation: I was never going to pay for it but still pirate it

"This is draconian and a violation of my rights as a consumer!"
Translation: I don't even know what draconian means but it sounds sophisticated so I will use it in my post I read somewhere else.
Translation: It's my right to belittles everyone who doesn't agree with me.

What are you republican?

Some people don't have the luxury of having maybe the internet all the time. Others have Time Warner that is moving to a model of charging by the bandwidth used per month so you have to pay to play games on line that eat up bandwidth for the hell of it.

I OWN 3 copies of From Dust and Settlers 7 (for me and my kids) The first chance I get you're damn right I'm hacking it because It's a waste of F-ing bandwidth for starters. All just so they can "secure it?"

Really? If DRM is sooo secure why does it still get hacked and removed then? DRM just punishes legitimate owners in the slim .0001% chance it might detour 1 person from pirating. That's pretty damn dumb. Meanwhile, it will detour 10,000 people from buying. Hey news flash if someone wants a game for free, they're going to get it.

So having my legitimate game stop every 5 minutes because their servers get overloaded due to the fact that they're too cheap to buy more than 60% of capacity for their "cloud." (Not to mention when someone in my house is watching Hulu.) BLOWS...

Wise up just because someone doesn't agree with you doesn't make them wrong. (maybe, just maybe, everyone else might be right and you're the one who's wrong.)

Valve's a pretty great company all things considered, I wish they would make gamers faster too but such is life. I wish Blizzard would make games as a faster pace too but they aren't horrible.

Yeah except it needs to be pointed out to you in every third topic Half of your posts are about how the average gamer doesn't understand the industry, business and blah blah blah

That's what makes it a great quote - pretty much anyone here averaging over 10 posts a month would be a hypocrite for saying it.

Silent Hunter 5 was one of the first if not the first to get it.

The autho servers were pooched at launch and so many could not log in to play their new game; er sorry, play their newly licensed game.

Ubisoft did send me a link + activation code for Prince of Persia....don't remember the version, nice gesture, not interested in it however.

I would rather they have taken the resources and time to finish the game before launch, and provide more support than a token patch that had a fix list smaller than those fixed by the modders (and some of which had already been fixed by the modders). Add to that the exact same bugs that were present in SH3 and 4, and that was the last time Ubi will bend me over.

As much as I was looking forward to Cliffs of Dover, I kept my wallet closed, and from what I've been reading, it was a good decision.

Ubisoft = shovelware these days. I will have to see universal acclaim from both critics and gamers alike to consider buying another of their products.

I may be one person, but I make sure to communicate my experience to everyone I know.

Hey Mr. High Horse, some of us don't give a shit when it comes to "working towards something better", whatever in the hell that may mean, when it comes to gaming. I know this might sound crazy, but sometimes we want to game without going on some holier-than-thou moralistic crusade. If you want to, then more power to you, but I'll save the crusading and moralizing for more critical endeavors, thanks.

Long time lurker (and gamer) - this comment resonated so closely with my own point of view, I had to create and account and big up the Prez.

Bottom line (however naive/simplistic others may think this view may be) for me is - "Is this game fun?". If DRM is the only thing that impacts the "fun" then the developer (or more likely, publisher) fucked up and I might well go the route of paying for a product but resorting to cracks/hacks to workaround the roadblock.

That said, I love the debates we get on Blue's on issues such as these and they are a welcome distraction during the day job (software dev for one of the biggies - unfortunately not gaming related...).

Reading this back, I haven't really contributed here, but now I've introduced myself in a fashion, perhaps I'll pipe up some more in future discussions...

Why should Ubisoft leave the pc market? They still make good money with pc games, because there are enough people out there, who use cracks or just endure the DRM, because they are emotional dependent on games.

Bullshit. The vast majority of gamers wouldn't know DRM from their asses, and in this day and age when people are used to playing games on Facebook, MMOs, multiplayer Call of Duty, the average gamer doesn't realize what's going on behind the scenes.

They're already used to having a permanent internet connection and games not working when the internet goes down and it's nothing more than a temporary, minor frustration that a rational person is more than capable of handling in a rational way.

2 GB... a month?

I use... that... in 8 hours without even trying (youtube HD, TV stream, IP TV, Voice over IP video telephone) - if such caps would exist where i live I'd consider emigration, you couldn't possible do any freelancing business with that cap.

Ubisoft doesn't care about who voices their concerns and objections to the drm, their only concern is hard sales numbers, pretty much like any other corporation. Since nothing exists to really prevent them from going to more extremes in the drm, their sales numbers is enough to justify making a new drm, hypothetically speaking of course, that would require to take a DNA sample from you each minute to confirm you're playing the game. This may not be legal but most of any eula is also on shaky legal ground in the eu and the us, so unless someone complained they would probably get away with it, like they do with this drm and eulas. Would you buy a game then?

With a warez copy in the wild, I'd have to put up with exactly none of that, just as I have put up with exactly none of Ubisoft's current idiotic DRM. And if I play it, I buy it. The developers shouldn't work for free. In the event there is no cracked version for whatever reason, I just hold off until there is. Simple.

I'm not naive enough to think my one purchase (or lack thereof) is going to even register in Ubisoft's awareness much less send them a message of some sort.

And since I belong to some consumer organizations you can bet this is something that makes me emotionally involved.

Fair enough, but that does not mandate that I be as well. I have a hell of a lot more critical issues in my life to get emotional about.

Actually all it would take is someone having enough, getting lawyered up. Or sending them a bill because their product requires the use of the internet to 'always be on' thus eating into the marginally pitiful bandwidth cap. Probably be a good test case for Canada. I mean Bell sure thinks that the average person here only uses 15GB a month.

Problem is, gamers can't be bothered, either because they think they wouldn't win (the EA Spore class lawsuits shows the exact opposite) or they can't be bothered because they are unaware or just don't care enough to see their rights throtled. Hence the gaming industry becomes a festering ground of anti-consumer experiments.

Here's a hypothetical question then:

Ubisoft doesn't care about who voices their concerns and objections to the drm, their only concern is hard sales numbers, pretty much like any other corporation. Since nothing exists to really prevent them from going to more extremes in the drm, their sales numbers is enough to justify making a new drm, hypothetically speaking of course, that would require to take a DNA sample from you each minute to confirm you're playing the game. Would you buy a game then?

Granted that this example is a hell of a ridiculous stretch but look around you and watch the practice of many consumer-unfriendly corporations and it's easy to see that if ubi can get away with anything, as long people keep buying their products they will get away, fucking both the buyers of the games and the ones who refused to buy.

In most instances where consumers sent a loud message to a corporation, signaling they wouldn't tolerate their shenanigans any further, they often made the "sacrifice" of not buying a product lest the corporation escalated their anti-consumer practices. And most of the times, this happened in fields that are considered hobbies to many.

Simply enough, if we don't take a stand by voting with our wallets now, regardless of the games being cracked or not, then we can expect the drm to be adopted by more publshers and getting worse and worse. I won't compromise my hobby for that. And since I belong to some consumer organizations you can bet this is something that makes me emotionally involved.

I played AC2 on a computer that had no internet connection for a while, trouble-free. I had a great time, and will cherish it as one of the best modern gaming experiences I've had in a long while. If this is getting ass-fucked, I guess I like it.

Hawx 2 WILL get cracked if it hasn't already; I don't really know because it was not high on my list. Which, incidentally is probably why it's crack took longer - it's kinda low on everyone's list. The uncrackable DRM does not exist. It may take weeks, months, or even a year in the case of SC Chaos Theory, but I can wait.

HAWX 2 sucked, no one cared to crack that game. and yes it has a much harder DRM to crack, but again the game is horrid and no one really careded to try and crack it.

It's up to us and us alone to make certain this drm dies and we can only do that by not buying the damned thing.

Some people don't get that worked up over it. I'm sorry you don't get that but it's your problem, not theirs. I'm not a big fan of EA for many reasons but I don't expect everyone to share my feelings on it. People are still going to buy The Sims 9 or Madden 2011 because they haven't necessarily shared my experiences with EA. Just like you and your Valve rants, most people don't personalize Steam/Valve, its just a method of obtaining games for them.

I kind of feel like putting this in my signature and pointing it out in every third topic, but I'm certain I'd take it beyond where you meant it.
