Quoteworthy - Epic on Unreal

"We have a couple other major franchises that we've not been paying attention to. It's been a long time since we shipped an Unreal game, and it's an awfully loved franchise that we hold pretty dear here. We haven't been giving it the attention it deserves because we've been focusing on Gears of War and we're still a relatively small company." -- Epic President Mike Capps.

I'm calling it right here and now: The Unreal franchise is getting transformed into Gears of War.

I really liked the environment and atmosphere they created in the original Unreal; but then they just forgot about it.

That's exactly what I was going to say! It's a shame that they left the original SP story behind and only do MP games for Unreal.

Yeah. Even the people that lament the consolization of Epic are mostly fans of UT and UT2004, which for all their virtues are a wholly different game than the moody exploration + combat on an alien landscape that was 98's Unreal.

I would pay for a remake of the original in the new engine. It has to be the original stuff though, with just the new bells and whistles as flourishes.

Why do people keep asking for this for every old game in existence?

Practically no developer is ever going to simply repackage a game exactly as it was a decade ago and have the only change be that it uses modern graphics. It just won't happen.

The only way stuff like that gets done is through fan mods. And they are almost always NOT like the original.

All the people who say they will pay for it make up so small a number that it just wouldn't make any sense. It's a decade-old game and the game industry just doesn't work like that.

Because they probably want this?

Hmmm, LucasArts did the two Monkey Island remakes, Microsoft just announced a Halo remake and i'm sure, with some research, i will come up with other examples.

It's a decade-old game and the game industry just doesn't work like that.
The game industry just DOES work also that way.

Actually, MS is doing exactly that with Halo Anniversary. It's the exact same game as Halo 1, only with better graphics. The first two Serious Sam games received the same treatment. In fact, there are tons of games getting this treatment, though most of them are simply "HD" upgrades (widescreen support + higher resolutions). Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, Street Fighter, Silent Hill, Puzzle Fighter, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Beyond Good & Evil, Earthworm Jim, Stranger's Wrath, Munch's Oddysee... HD remakes are all the rage these days. If people weren't willing to pay for them, then publishers wouldn't be making so many.

I'd pay $50 for a remake of Tribes 1 with modern graphics, in addition to having the community's script functionality integrated and the Blaster and ELF swapped out for the Shocklance. Hell, I'd pay $50 for a remake of System Shock and Deus Ex too.

Epic hasn't made a good game since UT2k4. If they can remake AND innovate a modern fast-paced non-realistic arena shooter with mods, THEN I might listen to them. Otherwise it's just PR bullshit.

Wow...I stand corrected. And I do own Serious Sam.

I hadn't heard of Halo anniversary. I wasn't much of a Halo fan.

Devil May Cry is a reboot though. Not necessarily the same game.

Splinter Cell will be remastered versions keeping the same gameplay.

The Prince of Persia games weren't identical remakes...they were more like series reboots.

I don't think I'd count Street Fighter either. That series has always cycled(and re-cycled) through different styles and implementations(it never really strayed too far from the original premise).

Earthworm Jim...yeah...it's pretty much the same game.

Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and Beyond Good and Evil are straight up HD remakes as well.

In any case, some of those games are using the name of the original but not the actual exact gameplay. A lot of them are also console only titles...that I can see anyway.

So I'd still not get my hopes up for someone to remake the original Unreal exactly and just add better graphics.

The original unreal is still one of my favorite games, but i don't know if a remake would really work as most will constantly be comparing it to the original. Even minor design mistakes could ruin it.

I would love a proper sequel though with all the elements that made the original game worthy: exploration and atmosphere. Those concepts are solely used in RPG's nowadays, not in straight shooters.

Come to think of it, adding RPG elements to the Unreal universe could work, although it would be a lot riskier I think.

I would, since it would mean replaying through some of the coolest SP levels ever: Terraniux, ISV-Kran, The Sunspire, Na Pali Haven/Outpost 3J, Bluff Eversmoking, Nali Castle, The Darkening...

Unreal's still my favourite FPS from that time period. No-one has managed to recapture that atmosphere of being all alone on an alien planet since.

"Why do people keep asking for this for every old game in existence?"

Yup, because those specific old games rocked harder than anything pretty well today. It might be as well that those older games didn`t have vehicles to totally overbalance the gameplay, and let certain f*cktards ramp up points cause they were a tad lacking in their onfoot skillz.

I loved Unreal till the vehicle emphesis came about. I`d love to see fewer vehicles, and more onfoot backtobasics. Totally loved the jump pad stuff. And low grav maps.

Those games bring fond memories. Oh we`ll have some memories of certain games of today I am sure. Memories of how some total f*ckhead dev added remote control car bombs, and remote helis and stuff, and other sundry cheap ass unbalance tactics so some other ingame scroowhead can get their jollies, while many others get raped ad infinitum.

I`d rather look back at when devs were cool tho, and made cooler games.

Unreal, even UT3, has some very interesting art design. I would like to play another singleplayer game, or a multiplayer with a PC focus, but I don't NEED it. I am fine without it. Similarly the fact the PC only got the first Gears of War is fine for me... one was enough for that franchise, I don't NEED more.

Hope to see some original IP in other words.
