Star Wars: The Old Republic Preorders

Preorders are now being accepted for Star Wars: The Old Republic on the official website for BioWare's upcoming MMORPG, though these are currently restricted to customers in the North American and European territories. They offer three different editions, the Standard, Digital Deluxe (only through Origin), and a Collector's Editions. Preordering any of the three entitles the purchaser to a virtual Color Stone as well as early access to the game, though it looks like the $150.00 USD Collector's Edition is already sold out.

I'll wait a few months for people to do the actual beta test for me and snap this up for $20. Paying $150 to guinea pig the latest EA MMO doesn't seem like a wise purchase decision but if everyone was wise with their money then the world would be a vastly different place.

How much do you think Bioware was actually changed by EA? I mean, their post-EA stuff isn't really that different from KOTOR/Jade Empire.

It's honestly the only reason I can think of they wouldn't go live globally. You'd have to imagine that they have infrastructure on order in case demand goes apeshit even on the limited US/Euro customer space let alone world wide.

And if they are hedging their bets, what caused them to be so skittish about it? First big ticket sci fi MMO in quite some time and the first significant SW title in a very long time to boot. The TOR forums are overflowing with the faithful singing their praises and I'm sure EA have seen the game. Unless they are worried that it's going to pull a WAR/AoC, ie. tank not long after go live requiring some serious server rationalisation, I can't see any reason not to pout infrastructure in to this based on pre-order numbers...

I can't believe how many people are buying this. And I'm even more amazed seemingly 90+% of the comments are positive towards it.

I admit, I have purchased a CE in my past. However, it wasn't for 3 times the price of the regular game. And it was a mistake as we know all Collector Edition purchases are. If you've never made the mistake, have yet to regret a CE purchase and you insist, by all means make the mistake.

I couldn't believe how unappealing the list of items included in the CE were.

$150 and I don't get ANYTHING decent AT ALL??

It didn't tempt me. And I used to play WOW in a hardcore raiding guild. If you can't tempt this Star Wards nerd, you aren't trying!

I've been waiting since EverQuest launched for a good Star Wards MMO. Don't even mention Galaxies. Skipped it and glad I did. But I have no intentions of skipping SWTOR.

The 7 day head start better be worth it to you. I can't believe how stupid the in-game items are. It was like they gave the CE design to a unpaid intern who waited till the day it was due to throw together a pile of shit and present it as a "Collections Edition".

And that "ability" to shop in a store that non-CE buyers can't is ridiculous. Expect opportunities for them to steal more of your money. Or, if enough people buy in to the concept, a majority of quality game content will become premium priced.

Oh wait, we have that already, they're called "FREE to play" MMORPG's.

For the normal $60 you now get a low res variant of the game, your character is not allowed to wear gear, whenever you hail a NPC you flatuate and Salacious Crumb can be heard laughing at you the entire time you play.

I'm going to send my message by avoiding this CE. It'll matter as much as my vote does in national elections. I won't get what I want, but at least I can say I voted against George W TWICE! I vote against crappy CE's TOO!

Early game access is extended to all everyone who pre-orders Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. If you have pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition, game access will begin seven days before the game’s release. If you have pre-ordered either the Base Edition or Digital Deluxe Edition, game access will begin three days before release.

I would not be surprised if they extended this 7 day period to the digital deluxe edition as well to encourage more sales on origin. 3 days hunh...will have to do I guess.

This little Aussie black duck ordered his CE from Amazon before they sold out. Damned if I was going to put up with this crap.

For people driven enough to bother, this is a viable alternative. But seriously, how an organisation like EA can be so brutally stupid about an mmo release is beyond me. My only thought is that they think (and may well be right) that the digital outrage will not significantly harm their sales of the game.

Tbh I was only considering playing because a bunch of good friends are signing up. Exclusion of most of the rest of the world for early access just made it that much easier to pass on pre-ordering and waiting to see if I want to buy in at all.

EA appears to be hedging their bets on server infrastructure. Instead of provisioning for millions of world wide users they're going to guage reaction in US/certain parts of Europe and see how much they want to tack on post release. I wonder how Bioware are appreciating EA making them look like a pack of assholes...

Also, 7 day access is only for the CE, 3 days for the other two types:

Ahh, just like RIFT. They don't want people to know it's lacking so they give them a tease of a few areas. Wow, they may as well just kiss that $500 million away. And when GW2 launches? Game over, man. Game over.

The original Guild Wars was the first game I can remember that had beta weekend events. As far as I know they pioneered the practice. Makes sense if the point of the large events is stress testing and preview. They have the smaller closed beta for gameplay feedback and bug hunting.

It does suck if you have fond memories of older MMOs that had huge open betas for months. Then again, I have to admit I only stay interested in any MMO for maybe 3 months at the most. If I'm in beta all that time, I end up not buying it because I'm sick of it by the time it's released.

They're blowing most of that money on the figure that it comes with the collectors edition. I don't know how little statues are worth that much to so many geeks, but apparently they are.

That particular statue isn't on their website, but they'll sell you a Greedo for only $160. No vidyagame included.

And early game access isn't beta acess, guys. So why pre-order something that you may well hate?

I'm under the impression that the "Early Game access" will be the only free trial period offered. I don't think they will be having an open beta. It's possible that the closed beta will send invites to all the pre-order ppl but I'd be surprised if they do that. The less people see of this game before it comes out the better for bioware.

Early starts usually don't affect the retail purchases. So once that early start period kicks off I can see the game for a few days and if it turns out to be something I like them I'm all set or if it's ok and might be better at a lower price I can cancel my order at that point and wait. This is what happened with STO. I was in the early start for that as well but canceled my order as I thought it wasn't worth the money.

Collectors edition has some damn good marketing moves that will probably get a ton of fans to drop the money. That exclusive store that will only be available to CE owners seems like something that a lot of fans will want to have....

I saw an article claiming they had already flushed $300 million down the toilet on this, so I imagine they're desperate to get some return on that before they hit the WoWclone iceberg.

Rattlehead wrote on Jul 21, 2011, 12:33:
Everytime I think about this game I die a little inside. Why, why couldn't they just make a traditional Knights of the Old Republic 3? KoToR 1 and 2 were really good, probably some of my favorite RPGs ever. Do we really need another god damn MMO?? The market is over-flooded with them.

Star Wars...especially KoToR doesn't fit as an MMO. Part of the appeal of Kotor was become the best Jedi/Sith Knight in the galaxy and carving your path through the storyline. Yea I can't wait to do that with TOR alongside the thousands of people doing the same thing as me. Race to the level cap!!

This is an MMO solely because Bioware wants the revenue generated by 10+ million subscribers and they think their WoWclone will succeed where all the others have failed.

I agree that Star Wars doesn't work well as an MMO - hello Star Wars Galaxies! It's pure megalomania where one superhuman saves the universe while MMOs require everyone to be equal. A game where a jedi is just some chump who can be defeated with a single punch - as I've seen in TOR trailers - isn't really Star Wars. I think they'd have been better off using their own Mass Effect franchise if they wanted to test the waters with an MMO. Hopefully this will be an earth shattering disaster and they'll stick to making RPGs for the rest of their existence.
