On PC Skyrim

The Skyrim Fan Interview on the Bethesda Softworks Forums discusses the upcoming installment in the Elder Scrolls series of RPGs with Bethesda's Todd Howard, Bruce Nesmith, and Matt Carofano (thanks IGN). Along the way Todd outlines what will differentiate the PC edition of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim:

64-bit specific exe? Not at this time. As far as UI, it visually looks the same across the platforms, but the controls are entirely different. There’s also a lot of “power user” stuff we do with the keyboard from how favorites work, to quick saves, and more that is similar to what we’ve done before in that area. We’re packing a lot of info on the screen and the whole interface is much less ‘look at giant fonts!’ than, say, Oblivion. The PC version also gets higher res textures, larger render modes, and a bunch of other effects you can scale up if your machine is a beast. Last but most important, is the Creation Kit we’ll be releasing for the PC. Modding the game and making it your own is very important to us and our fans, so we’re going to keep doing whatever we can in that area.

Why aren't we seeing 64bit binaries by now? Is setting a compiler flag too much effort? I'm sure they could release one on the side with no warranty implied etc. etc.

Still getting mod tools, so musn't grumble too much.

Um yeah.. Setting the compiler flag is one thing, fixing the 1000 issues that result from doing so is another. When you go 64-bit, you have to go 64-bit all the way (barring nasty hacks). That means you have to get all your third party code working as 64-bit too. Then you have to worry about maintaining two builds of everything: 32-bit and 64-bit.

Basically, it's WAY more of a hassle than setting a compiler flag. Developers must be sufficiently motivated in order to spend the time and money on a 64-bit build. And when their lead platform has a pathetic 512MB of memory, it's easy to see why that motivation doesn't exist.
