The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Mod

Andoran Prologue is a modification for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to create a non-linear open world RPG based on Elder Scrolls canon. The project is planned for release sometime this year, and in the meantime, they offer some screenshots and this gameplay trailer showing off the truly stunning visuals this will include. Here's word: "The action of Andoran unfolds in the setting of The Elder Scrolls. The location, where the Prologue takes place, is the island Andoran, one of the three islands of the archipelago south of Black Marsh, the native region of the pangolin-like Argonians. Andoran abounds with climatic zones and different cultures. Much attention is paid to the creation of unique places that will be on the players [sic] way." Thanks Cutter via PC Gamer/SolInvictus.

That's a pretty heavy assumption to make. Someone made a flashy video to advertise what they're making. There's no proof anywhere that this will be anything but a "beautiful-but-incredibly-dull environmental simulator' either.

Proof, no, but the description on the site already sounds far more ambitious than Oblivion or Skyrim. It's actually trying to be an RPG with ambiguous moral choices and open-ended narrative and quest design. Real choice and consequence too.

It looks nice and I may well try it if it ever gets made in english, but I have no intention of claiming it's better or worse than the original until I've tried it.

A mod remaking Morrowind with modern graphics wouldn't be a bad thing, but I'd love to see Daggerfall redone. That game was never stable and looked appallingly dated many years ago.

Maybe but the sequels never managed to capture what Daggerfall had to offer in terms of ambiance and atmosphere. Climbing the city walls and then riding your horse through the city with that little music was an experience that I will keep with me for ever. Jeremy Soule's a great composer but it's too bad they didnt keep the guys who did a great job with the midi music of Daggerfall. Heck even some music in WoW reminds me of that Daggerfall night music. And I am not even talking about the dungeon atmosphere. Daggerfall's graphics may be outdated but what it lacked most was a real tutorial. The mouse driven melee system was very interesting but difficult to get and the dungeons were quite unforgiving. ( As were the bugs )

Anyway, those guys did a great job and I hope they manage to release it prior to Skyrim, as it will give them more impact than if they don't.

2) They weren't in Oblivion either. It took modders a LONG time before they were able to do true levitation and finally even flight. Typically I find that Oblivion is better without flight anyway. A ruin that's high on top of a mountain is a far cooler journey if you have to walk/climb there, fighting some cool monsters, than if you just levitated there, grabbed the book, and fled.
I can see your point but I have to admit that flying around on my magic carpet was just too damn cool, especially with Unique Landscapes.

Thanks for that link, Nomaar. I've been thinking I should start up TES IV again and check out new mods. That one looks like it's worth a try.

I've been considering this as well, but I dont know what the great mods are and Im too lazy to puit any effort into finding out

This looks both Radical and bodacious.

I didn't know there were mods that did that! I always suspected they did away with levitating solely to keep you from flying over the closed city walls. They said it was for gameplay reasons though.

Yeah. By which they meant that you could see that the city was a completely different worldsphere altogether. But they made it damn hard to implement in the engine for some reason.

Yup, totally agree. Grain of salt here too. I just read another interview where they said the art assets were identical but rendered differently on the PC. Does that really count as higher definition textures?

No. It does not. Which is kind of strange, because I'm pretty sure the Xbox and PS3 versions of Oblivion didn't have a "High" texture option, whereas the PC did. (and it looked quite a bit better.)
Oh well, there will be a high res texture pack out in a month or so anyway.

Well, read the QA. It sounds different from either Morrowind or Oblivion. Something about finding enchanted items and "breaking them down." I did love the complexity in Morrowind. Your skill plus the quality of the item added to the strength of the soul. Love me them exquisite amulets!

Sounds like Ego Draconis, where the easiest way to get enchantments is to rip them out of other items.

Whats needed to be done:

Things like cell ownership so NPCs appropriately react when you steal, and they don't inappropriately sell stuff, and cobwebs in tombs, etc. Looks like its basically playable as it is, its mostly tweaking to more match oblivion.

Yeah I downloaded a bunch of stuff to get this going and then read much of the morrowind wilderness is totally empty (though of course you could make the case it pretty much was in the vanilla original too) which kind of turned me off.

1) I don't care so much about the enchanting slots, because you can always just boost the enchantment powers through a mod, but it still kinda sucks. It's fun to mix and match armor, and Greaves and Cuirass being one part makes no sense.
No real horrible news for me in the QA. I can live with one less slot, but I will definitely miss it.

5) I think they said they were going back to the system of Morrowind, where you need souls in order to enchant. Of course, even in Morrowind you could easily abuse it, since you'd have the highest soul stone available, and would just summon the highest level monster over and over until you got his soul, but it's better than the boring stuf it was in Oblivion.

On a related note, there's an interesting Skyrim post that answers fan questions here:

http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?%2Ftopic%2F1207390-skyrim-fan-interview%2F

Bad news (IMHO of course): Cuirass and Greaves are now combined into a single armor piece, for visual reasons. Means fewer enchanting slots. (1) Levitation and mark/recall are not in Skyrim (as expected). (2)

Good news: You can get married and move into a house with your spouse. (3) PC version gets higher res textures, larger render modes, better keyboard support, etc. (4) No giant fonts (I think). Enchanting is a true skill and it sounds more complex. (5) You will be able to continue playing after finishing the main quest. (6)

Thanks for the linkies.
