More on Minecraft's Adventure Update

The Word of Notch has a "trickle" of information about the eventual version 1.8 "Adventure Update" for Minecraft, the sandbox adventure game:
The update is pretty big, and will change a lot of how Minecraft is played, focusing on making exploration and combat much more rewarding, and bringing in a bigger sense of adventure to the game.

Already implemented are new complex terrain features, at least one new mob, some interesting new combat mechanics, a new lighting engine, and some experimental new gameplay ideas. To come is more interesting farming, bigger incentives to explore, and npc villages.

Me too. However I'd say that's what makes him a true developer. He isn't as interested in the money as he is continuing to work on his creation.
But from what I can see he's now involved in running the company more than doing the dev work, and he's jumping into other non minecraft projects.

I've wondered this about Mark Zuckerberg, once when questioned about why not sell for the billions he has been offered he actually gave a pretty good answer. It was something along the lines of, "This is the best idea I am ever going to have in my life. I want to stick with it."

Personally the best idea I ever had was the idea I might have enough money that I wouldn't have to ever work again. Maybe that will actually happen someday...

Everytime someone says something about him having tons of money, that makes me want to correct them He has a chunk, but not nearly as much as people assume, and its going to go fast the way he's spending it.

Plus, I see businesses having problems with economies of scale all the time. cliff at positech games is having issues with it for instance, he's tired of the indy $10 pricing and wants to branch out. More power to him, but if he charges $30+ he'd better have a game that's worth paying that much with better everything (i.e. more resources invested into making it) or I'll pass it by.

Terraria?
I've purchased both that and minecraft, and to be honest, I've enjoyed and played more Terraria than minecraft. Plus, the devs show good support for the product, patching fast and adding lots of content. Release version had a couple fairly serious bugs, such as crashing when exiting settings menu. They fixed that within days. Now they've done 2 big content patches within a month, so I'm impressed.

If he actually made those sales which I still say is bullshit. Untill his banker says otherwise I call shenanigans. And yeah, I'd have to agree more like random lottery winner who got lucky and that's it. Obviously time will tell, however. I know I certainly wouldn't be betting on him in any case.

I would have cashed out too - or just farted around with game dev until I got bored.

And that may be what he's doing. That's fine. I got my $6 worth.

It doesn't make an awesome Minecraft game, but there are plenty of other companies that will rip the idea off and make a clone. First to market doesn't always mean best of breed.

2,656,651 purchasers. I think it was near 2 million when they first went to beta status, something like $12 per purchase of 2 million. So thats $24 million. I'll just round it up to $30 million since I don't know the exact mix of 50% off and 25% off customers or the average exchange rates for that period.
Consider that they are going to lose at least half of that in taxes since notch is in sweden. So they have $15 million. And with that money he's hiring several people, getting a big office building, etc. Its not nearly as much as it sounds like. Its a great amount for an indie game, but its nothing compared to something like one of those CoD games.

Thats why its so dangerous if he tries to grow too fast, he could use up all the money he's made and go bankrupt. So many small businesses get caught up in economies of scale once they start to get a little growth and go bankrupt. If he had stayed a 2 or 3 person operation working out of homes, they would be set for life but would probably only be able to concentrate on minecraft and its expansions/sequels. Now he has a company, but he seems to be spreading it too thin and not concentrating on the product that was his success.

Honestly, if I was him, I probably would have sold the game out to someone who would be interested in developing it, and retire. Maybe make another game if I wanted too, since I would have name recognization.

Alright I'm going to pick up this Terraria game then. The general consensus seems pretty good and it's cheap right now.

Minecraft kind of lost me when Notch started introducing the other dimension, that just didn't sound appealing at all.

Here's hoping for some rare artifact style items, no adventure is ever quite complete without them.

Terraria has less people working on it and yet they still seem to do more frequent content patches that have much more content in them than minecraft That last patch was huge.
June 23, terraria patch added like 50 items and 8 monsters.
June 10, terraria patch added a couple dozen vanity items and over a dozen monsters.

I've said it before, I think Notch is spreading out too thin with his new resources, and doing it on weird projects (like that card thing he promised his friend he would do). They should concentrate on Minecraft until its done, perhaps plan for another project, but not devote significant resources to anything else until they are done with minecraft. Once minecraft is officially released, then go for expansions and start another project.

I made the mistake of starting Terraria with a Huge world. It would take hundreds and hundreds of hours to fully explore everywhere. Plus I wander aimlessly while underground, following every branch of tunnel I can find. REALLY need a map.

There are mapping utilities for the game. They output the map as a PNG file you can look at with a graphics program. A map function isn't included with the game since part of the game is exploring and finding out stuff on your own. If you know exactly where all the big deposits are, and where the [SPOILER] dungeon, floating houses, underground jungle, and corruption, etc are, it can take some of the fun out of it for some people.
