Saints Row: The Third Trailer

GameTrailers has a new trailer from Saints Row: The Third with a walkthrough of open world gameplay in the sandbox action game sequel. This includes beating on random pedestrians, hitting homeless people with a giant purple dildo (no really), making people explode with the apoco-fist, calling in an airstrike on an opposing gang, and engaging in a tank mayhem side-mission. In addition to random acts of violence, they also show custom outfits, maniacal driving, flying the VTOL jet (which includes further random acts of violence), as well as a few surprises (which also include further random acts of violence).

In various interviews with Volition they said they know the SR2 port was bad and intend to keep the PC development in house this time to ensure quality control. They outsourced the PC port for SR2.

I never played the second one. How was it? Seeing as how there's no new GTA to be found, I'm considering getting the third one.

The second one is like $15 on Steam, so with minimal investment you could give it a try. People only say good things about it...

From everything I've heard, the PC port of SR2 is utter shit, so I think I'll skip the PC version... Thanks for the heads up, though.

This video seemed to be in a demo God mode of sorts. No cops, no gang fighting back. SR2 had people fight back or run away, so I have no doubt this one will too.

Looks really nice. Looking forward to this game.

yeh they also made lots of hilarious comments too

still one of my favorite gaming moments ever - i was playing SR2. just fucking around with the sandbox stuff, getting into a car with a group of 2 other "homies".. and the song "Sister Christian" comes on the radio, and the black dude says "yo, this shit is my JAM!" and started singing along with it.. i almost bust a gut laughing

Everyone in Saints Row has become so accustomed to the sight of gratuitous violence that they don't even care anymore.

Which is nice from a gameplay point of view, as having to chase people down gets tiring. Having to chase only a few down while the rest kind of sigh and take it is much nicer.

But yeah, in the teaser trailer a gunfight opened up in a bar and a crowd formed to watch it while some people just totally ignored it. The main character used his best friend as a human shield then high fived him.

Saints Row isn't reality.

Am I the only one that didn't find this appealing? The world seemed kind of sterile. He walked around and beat people up and no one seemed to notice or care. I like that in GTA pedestrians fight back or at least run away. It looks like in SR, the only time they acknowledge your existence is if you dance or do burnouts in front of them.

I think that's kinda the point. Everyone in Saints Row has become so accustomed to the sight of gratuitous violence that they don't even care anymore.

I played the first one at a buddy's, and though it was fun (blowing the El off its tracks with a rocket launcher was fucking hilarious, especially when the fucking thing juggernauted down the street and crushed me,) but it always felt off to me somehow. The driving was too floaty and the firefights too wacky for me to really enjoy it. (Of course I was comparing it to GTA, so perhaps that was my mistake...)

I never played the second one. How was it? Seeing as how there's no new GTA to be found, I'm considering getting the third one.

Edit : Trailer is fun. Ridiculously over the top, but that's of course the whole point. However, the driving physics looked like utter shit.

I've never played the other games, as I just thought of them as GTA ripoffs.

Take GTA, strip out all the crap that isn't fun, quadruple the ridiculousness of the stuff that is, and you've got SR.

The tone was a bit off in the first but the second was nearly perfect.

As the neighbor kid in The Incredibles said...

THAT WAS AWESOME!

Question is... how will it play on a PC? No offense, I've yet to finish Saints Row 2 (or play the 1st one) due to the glaring issues with the pc port (even with the community patches).

Using a steering wheel on a Burnout game is like using the Space Shuttle controls to fly a kite.

This game, however, looks awesome. Seems like it's going to be a ridiculous, crazy ass blast of a game.
Hopefully they'll end up having a demo as well

AHAHAHAHAHAHHAA.

On one hand, I do enjoy that it finally recognizes that you're awesome.
On the other, I can't deny that starting with all the cool stuff makes it less fun and interesting. But I'm sure there's some kind of gameplay mechanic there, I'm just hoping it isn't that you quickly lose it and try to get it back. Some games do that, and to me being awesome briefly then losing it doesn't make me want to get it back, it just makes me feel like I've seen all the game has to offer and no longer want to work for it.

I'm assuming they have something great lined up beyond this and we'll find out soon.

Manapult looks hysterical. Entire game looks hysterical.

I love the awesome button mocking they did, the game literally has an "awesome button" that makes anything you're doing have a cinematic camera style and makes the action itself more ridiculous.

Really looking forward to this, the Saints Row games basically took the open world mayhem crown from GTA. They are doing the port in-house just like Red Faction Armageddon which was an "ok" game but an excellent port. So hopefully this won't end up like Saints Row 2 PC did.
