DICE on (Free) Battlefield 3 Battleog

BF3 goes to E3 on the Battlefield Blog has word from DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson on plans to show off Battlefield 3 at E3. They also discuss their Battlelog "web destination," and in a pretty straightforward dig at the just-announced premium Call of Duty Elite service, they make a point of noting this will not cost anything:
Of course there are things we will not be showing at E3, including the game’s extensive co-op campaign, the introduction of Team Death Match mode and the Battlefield 3 Battlelog web destination – featuring powerful social tools, feeds and detailed player stats. Battlelog also lets you manage your friends lists, squad up, create platoons, use voice chat and follow your friends’ progress in real-time, and more. Battlelog will be available for the monthly fee of (drum roll)... zero dollars. We look forward to providing more information on these features in the near future!

In addition to wanting to show up Activision (it definitely generates great PR for BF3 to come out and say you've offering social features for free that they will charge for), I think them doing this is in response to both of the free-to-play Battlefield games not doing well. I remember EA saying that Battlefield Heroes fell well below expectations (as did Quake Wars before it which wasn't even their thing) and other than an ad during the ATI driver installer, I've heard absolutely nothing about Battlefield Play4Free since it launched. I think if those had succeeded, EA would be trying to charge for this but I think they learned before Activision that by and large, people in the US don't care about this stuff enough to shell out money for me. CoD does have a large dudebro fanbase who may not know any better but I'd wager that CoD Elite will also not meet their expectations and it will either get cheaper or go free eventually as well.

To be honest, I would have preferred BF3 to have been more like Planetside in terms of persistence, teamplay, etc. If implemented correctly I would have been willing to pay a monthly fee or micro-transactions. Simply making an updated Battlefield when Bad Company has already brought us a modern combined arms game of the same ilk will make it pretty much redundant.

Unless DICE has something up their sleeve that blows everyone away, I don't see much to get excited about.

Unless I missed a new detail, theater mode should still exist for free. They said they weren't getting rid of anything that's already in the game for cod elite.

Not getting rid of a feature is not the same as saying they won't charge for it

Theater mode seems like the perfect feature to add behind the paywall... it doesn't affect core gameplay in any way but it is a useful addition to the game, so I just assumed this is what they would charge for. Not really sure one way or the other.

Fraps records the video of your screen, battle recorder-type features record the game itself; the movement and actions of the players.

My only fear is that in Bad Company 2, the friends part never seem to work. You think that they have that fixed, I hope so.

I've had it on pre-order since it could be bought. I'm not gonna miss out on one of the best games ever, what do you think I am, a COD noob..

Oh, DICE, you got it all wrong. Don't you want to learn from Kotick? Kotick is a GENIUS! He lets his customers pay for his future "You gotta stay online to play even single player offline"-DRM! Stay online to play Kotick's games, and pay for it by paying for stats and social network bs. It's like Valve would ask you to pay for Steam! See, DICE, that's the way to make money: take it from the fools and give it to the greedy. That's pure shareholder value! Again, Kotick is a genius when it comes to making money. Now I'm off to buy some Activision shares, because I want my PROFIT!!! $$$$!!!

Oh, and Activision's going to buy DICE out sooner or later. And after that: ca-shing! PROFIT!!! Pay for the formerly free stats and service! This is the future of gaming! $$$!

I have been holding off from upgrading my old C2Duo machine for this beast since I wan't to see what AMD has to offer in comparsion to Intels Sandy Bridge. But the problem for me is I can't find any specs for this yet. I thought they would be out now? Or I have I just missed it?

Will they be adding what is now known as Theater mode, or demo recording in the game? I was pleasantly surprised to see it in Black Ops and enjoyed it quite a bit. It was probably the first time demo recording was implemented in a non Valve/Source game in many years. Of course, they're making it a paid feature in COD Elite which means I won't be using it again but it is a nifty thing. So, will Battlefield have it as well?

Isn't this what fraps is for?

If you haven't played Black Ops, their implementation of theater mode was a huge improvement. Every single game was recorded permanently and automatically, and could be easily played back in engine from any perspective. The timeline added automatic markers for events like kills and deaths, and generated a map of all of your deaths so you could analyze your strategy. If you just wanted to show off, you could tag games or make clips and submit them to the gallery in-game or export to youtube. It also made identifying cheaters very easy for server mods, even after the fact. All with a proper GUI interface instead of console commands.

Not to mention the ability to see the match from other points of view than your own, something that fraps is incapable of.

And for the person with fraps question. Fraps lowers framerate which is not a good thing when you're trying to play a fast paced game.

I wish Battlefield 3 would match all the features in Black Ops like bots, player run servers, mod tools. Then they can keep talking trash.

It's a different approach, but essentially yes.
I shared the same thought though, a lot of people just go this route anyway because they are going to want the video for one reason or another.

Battlefield 2, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and Halo 3 / Reach all support demo recording in some form. Most RTSs obviously do. I've probably missed something.

As far as I can tell, Bad Company 2 doesn't. It would be a great feature for the Battlelog thing though.

Right BF2 is the last one I'd count from your list. Quake Wars came and went and no one noticed . And I'm aware that Halo has demo recording... it's actually a bit sad that console games can have it and PC games miss out mostly. Was referring to FPS games only btw.

And yea, it would have been a great thing to have in BC2. All of us have had our own special 'Battlefield moments' while playing the game, and it would have been awesome to be able to record demos of them. This is why I hope EA will actually give a feature set comparable to COD Elite instead of just touting that it's free but not making it as good.
