It is an awesome pedestrian slaughter fest and destruction derby game though. Hell there's even a bit of world exploration to do with the crazy maps. Your right, "racing game" is not very acturate, I dont ever recall winning a race by finishing the laps. I always destroyed the opponents to win each race. I have tried and tried to get C1 to run on my win7 machine, I tried dosbox and so far have been unable to play it. I keep gettin an error sayin fullscreen mode not supported.

Yea, I have run into the same issues trying to reinstall and play both of them. I really wish someone would get ahold of them and make them compatible.... I've actually emailed GOG asking if they would or could please patch up then sell the old Carmageddons, this was their reply:
Hello,
I'm afraid that I can't comment on whether or not we'll be releasing certain titles. I can only assure you that we're doing everything possible to get our hands on the best good old games.
Unfortunately the process is very complex and difficult. Not all publishers wish to sell their back catalog, not all can be convinced that "no DRM" is a good idea, and sometimes it's just plain impossible to research who (if anyone) has the rights to a certain title. Getting an old game to work on modern systems often proves to be the easiest task.
Check out this Q/A video, featuring one of my superiors - Marcin Iwinski, for a first-hand view of how it works:

Finally, please stay tuned and check out our news page every week for new release info. --- Regards GOG.com Support |

C2 runs great in compatibility mode as it is more current and engine more up to date.
C1 requires DosBox and has definite frame rate issues in -hires or high yon(.ini draw distance) settings. 3dfx emulation works and allows high resolutions but again at higher gfx settings has frame rate issues. Something in how DosBox works or how the old game engine works doesn't allow our super fast computers of today to make it fly; the game is throttled some how.
According to http://vogons.zetafleet.com/ , currently C1 pretty much still requires actual original hardware to run at decent frame rates if you want extra high settings. C1 has a more psycho, raw, personal feel to it. C2 starts to feel more like a sanctioned racing, car combat game. C1 feels like madness, randomness, free for all on the streets. I still think everyone is wrong about I76. Yeah, the atmosphere was great but the game was just dogfighting in 2 dimensions. Circle circle circle get behind get some shots off circle the other way circle the other way.
I'll take a WWI/II flight sim over it any day so I get that third dimension. |

Both rollcage games are bland racing games and i'82 wasnt really worth compared to the first iteration. And none come close to the ultra violence of Carmageddon, where you HAD to be aggressively massacring pedestrians in order to avoid the "game over" message. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqrftlCAic0 yeah it was better. and looking at that video it's held up pretty well (in an old school kinda way). the pedestrian sprites have charm. compared to the obviously dated 3d meshes from the sequel.
i remember massive lans with c1 (massive as in 8..or however many players were allowed). alternating quake 1 and c1. |

I hope it's at least as good as the first game. That means, having the same features, blood, mindless violence, the splatter bonus, the idiotic transformations, vehicle deformations, wonky but coherent physics that give a feeling to each vehicle... We'll have the answer soon, if the game is banned in several countries we know it's a success. |

Oddly, I have no recollection of the in-cockpit camera, which these days is jerkier than an animated gif, but is kind of a nice touch that's well synched with the action. |

It's every bit as violent as the first game, but the 3d models are comepletely deformable, and the cars come apart wheverver they're hit. The deformation in C2 was actually more limited than in C1. In C2, once a car exploded, that was it. It couldn't be deformed any further. In C1, you could keep smashing into the wrecks until they were completely unrecognizable. I spent many an hour pushing wrecks against walls, driving to the other side of the map, then charging into the wreck at maximum velocity.
I hope the new game not only increases the vehicle destructibility but also the environmental destructibility. I'd liked to see different materials have different properties. For example, if I smash into a thin brick wall, I should go right through it. Conversely, if I smash into a thick concrete wall, I'd be stopped in my tracks. |
