The Witcher 2 Workarounds

A post on the Witcher 2 Website has workarounds for some issues in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings to help players out while waiting for the patch planned for next week. They discuss difficulties with activation codes, CRC errors on installation, the game failing to launch, poor performance on high-end GPUs, and ATI-specific issues. There's also a separate note for folks with CRC mismatches downloading DLC, saying: "We are aware of that problem and we have a solution already prepared in the upcoming patch. Until that we ask you kindly not to download the DLCs until the patch release as it won't work without it."

Amazing game. Very little issue so far and well worth any troubles in my opinion. One of the best cRPGs to date. Funny how I never thought of it before but Dragon Age borrows the idea of the Grey Wardens from Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher.... ironic since DA just doesn't compare in my opinion. I bought the GoG.Com digital version but I'm going to buy a hard copy too... CDProjekt is a studio we want to expand. And when you comparing the original Witcher with the Witcher 2.... I can't wait to see there next project. One of the best studios around no doubt. King of the Hill at this point.

I also hope they port it to consoles. A game this good deserves to be played.

edit: My favorite line so far and alternate outcome? "I need you no more. Let the feast begin, boys!"

Agreed 200%. I too bought it from GoG but plan on picking up a boxed copy just to support CDPR. Your choices matter and change the story, unlike another RPG developer who claims choice yet in Bioware titles, at least the past few anyway, your choices don't change the story or mean shit.

Bioware could learn a thing or two from CDP. Like how to make a deep, complex, rpg.

I'd really like to know how it plays on an Alienware M11x R1, the core 2 duo 1,7ghz version. I know it says 2,2 ghz cpu minimum but other games had a higher cpu requirement and the m11x played it just fine due to the solid video card. Any experience here?

Enjoying the game, no probs running it on high. activation was no prob, got both my DLC' (Troll Troubles and Mysterious Merchant ) on the 1st day it was released (store bought hard copy in my hand)--but them the language pack d/l's caused a prob and have never got them. Don't know why I would have to d/l english voice overs and subtitles since I already have an english version of the game.

However, not to have a working forums with tech support up and running before the games release to assist those with problems is inexcusible, bordering on incompetence.

The only problem I have with TES/Oblivion style guards is that they're psychic. If you commit a crime in one city, every other city knows. Even if it's a 2 coin plate. There is a mod at least for oblivion using OBSE that changes guards so they only know what's happening in their own town/city/etc.

Agreed. Especially when some of the stuff you find in their belongings are potentially damning evidence of crimes.

Also odd that you can do nice things for all the poor people, and then rob them blind and still be regarded as a nice guy.

Wish they took the approach TES (Morrowind / Oblivion) did with that, where if people catch you, they get angry and the guards get involved. Funny that they thought of getting the guards involved if you draw your sword in town, but not if you steal everything that's not bolted down.

Their login servers are certinly incapable of keeping up with the demand; that is a little scary for a compay intertwined with GoG.com.

I have not played that far into the game, but there seem to be a lot of little bugs here and there: Geralt has issues with doorways, in-game cinematics have radom people walking through them, I occasioally automatically lose a game before I have even started it, the game occassionally swaps quests on me, quite a few issues with the positional action prompt, rolling invisible dice, having lost an entire level on a saved game, inability to loot items, some side quests not saving their completed status correctly, etc.

Also, though I guess it is intentional, it feels really weird that there is no penalty for stealing. I think you should be able to do it if you are seaky about it, but it's another matter to be standing right in front of a person as you sift through all their belongings and take what you want nilly willy.
Certainly a good game, but tiring when I have to do something repeatedly.
Waiting to see the amazing combat system; just rolling around like a monkey,

I can't even create an account to register. That is, I did get the account created, but it won't accept my login and hasn't since launch day.

Since I bought the game on GOG, I need to register to get DLC and patches. Support haven't answered my email, and the "recover password" link does nothing apart from telling me it has sent me an email it really hasn't.

No biggie as long as they fix it at the same time as they release the patch, since I'm waiting for that before starting to play anyways. But still, a rather botched release.

Until the patch arrives you can do this to invert the mouse:

Edit the user.ini file (the one in your documents folder) and change the MouseSensitivityY value to a minus value.

I'm sure you've tried this but turn off the cat ai so it runs on a single gpu.

I had to switch off crossfire so I wasn't stuck at 10-15fps.
Now it runs fine.

The only problem I had was not being able to install it due to CRC errors on a file. I fixed that by dumping the DVDs to my hard drive and installing it that way.

Had 2 crashes to the desktop, but that's not bad in the 20hrs I've played it, considering what others are having.

No invert mouse workaround. Damn, guess I have to wait.

And no, I won't accept the idea of retraining myself to disable inverted, since only the very, very odd game once in a blue moon doesn't support it, and it's usually fixed before I would even be able to get used to the opposite.

In the years since I've played the last PC game that didn't support inverted mouse, I wouldn't ever expect that the next one to do it would be a PC-only favorite like The Witcher.

I'm running a newish-midrange 1GB Radeon 5850 (backed up by an i7 930 and 6GB DDR3) and the game runs great, solidly 40+ FPS on Ultra and just gorgeous. It's not just the technical aspect of the graphics, though, it's the overarching art style and the shocking lack of glitches. That last point is really a big one: there's no textures sticking through other textures, flashing, weird field effects, obvious banding or grandients, or any of the other things I'd just come to accept as part and parcel of current graphics, and that consistency combined with high-quality assets and overall direction make amazing graphics unobtrusive. Unobtrusive is really the ultimate goal in visual fidelity: make the imagery so good that it's the character, story, plot, game mechanics, and everything else that draw you in, and that's because what you're seeing isn't constantly jolting your brain with "This is fake!" warnings. Not to say that they always get away with it, but it's a big enough leap that everything else will look that bit duller.
