MinecraftCon?

The Word of Notch has an update from the Minecraft creator wondering about the level of interest in a convention to celebrate the game's official launch on 11/11/11, perhaps to be held in Las Vegas. This separate post has a poll on where to hold this "MinecraftCon," and here's word from the original post, which also includes a poll gauging general interest:
We’re thinking about how to celebrate reaching the release on 2011/11/11. There’s also a significant lack of a MinecraftCon this year. Perhaps we can combine them?

So we’re thinking of perhaps setting up a MinecraftCon in Las Vegas on 2011/11/11, with all of Mojang going there, and us pushing out the final release live on stage or something. There’d be contests (costume, speed building, whatever else), Q&A sessions, parties and awesome food and such. This would be a great opportunity to both celebrate the release, and to meet the fans up close again.

It’d probably cost about 90 dollars per person, excluding hotel room and travel costs, although it’s possible we might be able to set up bulk deals with some hotel.

It's a great game that isn't for everyone. But a "Con" for it seems a bit over the top.

After a quick search by date, over 800 Minecraft videos have been uploaded to YouTube in the past 18 hours. I was going to try to get the stat for 24 hours but YouTube search wasn't going any farther.

So with over 800 in less than a day, you have to imagine that only the hardcore fans are making and uploading YouTube videos and they aren't all doing it constantly and there's plenty who don't upload videos.

I'm predicting that the event would hit capacity very quickly. It's a very active and large community.

I wish they would unblock Minecraft wiki at work. These articles are crazy detailed:

I think most people will be too busy playing Skyrim.

You mean "attempting to play". Historically, Bethesda games have been both hardware intensive and buggy as a motherfucker out of the box.

I gather you hate Tetris and other block based puzzlers then due to the graphics not being high poly count and flashy enough for you..

Hate no... haven't played them in ages, yes. And you are comparing a 2D Raster game to a 3D polygon game.

Saying Minecraft needs better graphics is like saying LEGO blocks need more polygons. It's a block-based building game. You can install high res textures but higher polygon count "blocks" would impact the gameplay directly and adversely.

In short, it wouldn't be Minecraft anymore.

I suppose I understand that too. I just don't get the fandom / addiction over this game. Of course, I don't get the addition over angry birds either... and I watch a co-worker play it on his laptop at lunch all the time.

I guess puzzle games aren't my cup o' tea. which is weird because I like puzzles in Adventure games or RPGs.

I completely understand that. I just personally can't do anything under "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" graphics level.

There's a few exceptions (System Shock 2, Dues Ex, and Half-life), but even those are WAY above Doom 1 era graphics of Minecraft.

Mindcrap... wtf?

I know PC gamers are desperate for good games, but this is effin' ridiculous.

IT'S NOT FRICKIN' 1991, PEOPLE! WE ACTUALLY HAVE GRAPHICS CARDS THAT CAN RENDER HIGH POLYGON 3D OBJECTS, SUPPORT OVER 16 MILLION COLORS, AND CAN HANDLE TEXTURE RESOLUTIONS WAY ABOVE 32x32!!!

My video card weeps.

Minecrafts appeal is not in the graphics (although some people may say they prefer it) but in the completely destructible, endlessly, randomly generated, world-that you (and friends) can also build in.

Granted, I would love a version of Minecraft that uses all of the power of today's graphics cards, but that would take the resources of a dedicated studio-and it's pretty obvious that the general gaming industry would rather fund another call of duty than risk something new.

I'm actually afraid to mention this to co-workers right now, who are currently at peak minecrack addiction (it'll wear down a bit soon).

This is a great idea, anytime we can advertise PC Gaming we should. If you guys listened to last weeks PC Gamer Podcast they were talking about getting the word out about why YOU LOVE PC GAMING, this is a great example of that.
