Out of the Blue

MrsBlue changed jobs recently, so I am no long required to chauffeur her to and from the train station each day, which has reduced my opportunities to show off my gift of being a magnet for terrible drivers. Of course the fates have a way of maintaining balance, as I learned the other day was we drove down a local boulevard. A car coming from the opposite direction slowed at the gap in the median in order to make a left turn. Aware that I seem to be a particular target of bad drivers of the world, I watched warily as the car inched forward, and sure enough, it proceeded to attempt its turn about two car lengths in front of us. To say I had to stand on the brake to avoid an accident seems like an understatement: It's not easy to screech the tires with anti-lock brakes outside of the movies, but our stop sound like something right out of Hollywood, except for the blare of my horn. We stopped about three feet short of where the car sat in our path, and the chagrin was clear on the face of the other driver, who was a girl who looked all of 16, reinforcing every prejudice I have about allowing young people loose on the streets behind the wheels of cars. And you kids better stay off my lawn too!

They must be the same person. [grin]

Alright this next test may involve trace amounts of time travel. So word of advice: if you meet yourself on the testing track don't make eye contact. Love the Mexican Stormtrooper too. That's one to keep in mind for Halloween, haha. 'Hey gringo, are these you droids?'

Why would Fox renew the Cleveland show? It sucks more than Hoover.

I'm going to guess at the nationality and say Chinese It may be a stereotype, but it's one that's well-founded, at least for Chinese immigrants. That's actually how they drive in China. All the time in most places. Only a few of the largest cities have somewhat more orderly drivers, but even there it's not at all like it is here.

I just returned a couple weeks ago from my latest visit to China. Had one of the most harrowing cab rides of my life while visiting one of the smallish towns a little ways outside of Shanghai. I could have sworn he was going to kill several pedestrians, and we only avoided several collisions by mere inches, all at at least 40mph+ and over the course of maybe 3 miles or so. It's pretty much a big game of chicken over there.

I've been fairly luck with unsafe drivers lately... until Monday.

I was driving to work, and an older man (of a specific nationality) was on his cellphone. He saw me, I know that because he looked at me before going.

My car hand't moved, I was in traffic on the long/main road of a T-intersection. He approached the T with cell-phone in hand, looked at me, slowed down, and then GAVE IT GAS. Not "oh I hit the wrong pedal" acceleration but steady and deliberate.

There was no space in front / behind / to the side of me. I just happened to be watching him just before he started to accelerate so I had time to lay on the horn to give him enough time to stop.

Very close to my new car.

Kicker was, he started cursing at me. Stop sign, cellphone, my car sitting there un-moved, and still he blamed me.

Normally I try not to block anything (even driveways) but had little choice this the guy in front of me stopped short.

You drive like I do, Blue: Planning for the worst at any given time, and rarely disappointed.

Glad everyone's ok.
