Out of the Blue

I finished the single-player Portal 2 campaign, and I am very impressed at how it lived up to the expectations set by its predecessor, which I've long considered a "perfect" game, or close to it, and certainly one of my favorites of all time. I think that Portal 2 fits into both those categories as well: It's near perfect, and it also already ranks among my favorite-ever gaming experiences. I generally take my time when playing games, but this one I tore through voraciously, though according to Steam I have played for 13 hours (I would have guessed a little less). This is in part because I know I'll play the game over again, and probably in part because I got into a "how quickly can I solve this" mode during a blast through the original Portal prior to the sequel's release, which I completed in about 90 minutes; including close to 30 minutes navigating through Aperture Labs for the final encounter. Anyway, the pacing of the game was great, the new puzzle elements like the gels were integrated very smoothly, Stephen Merchant and J.K. Simmons are brilliant, and some of the puzzles turned out quite challenging in a satisfying sort of way. Very simply, I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS. It's hard to overstate my satisfaction.

I think you are using it the way most people do, by the fourth definition, which does not describe my intent: "entirely without any flaws, defects, or shortcomings: a perfect apple; the perfect crime."

Except too many people use the fourth definition.

That a game should have zero bugs, zero flaws, and not be released until those conditions are met.

Not related to your back-and-forth, but I figured worth mentioning since I just flipped through a whole bunch of those kinds of posts on a PC game's forum yesterday.

Speaking of Star Control 2, I emailed Blue about GOG having 1+2 now, but I think it might have gotten lost in his spam folder.

Hey, Metro 2033 is on sale for $10 on Steam for the weekend. Is it worth it?

I'll prob get it for that. Heard relatively good things about it.

Every other game out there, even if you turn off the gore, still has guns and shooting so that's a no-go for our soon-to-be 4 year old. I can't wait til the gun ban is lifted. She won't even let me play Contra with him, which is probably fine since we're still working on SMB1 level 1-2. He's getting there, though.

Just wanted to give you a thumbs up. I remember playing combat and space invaders on the 2600 with my dad, and it was a great time.

Wife and I just started the game last night and are enjoying it. It's been awhile since we had a co-op game we could play in front of the kid(soon to be plural O.O).

The 11+gig download was a bit much, but it finally got there after 5 or 6 hours. I have a low-end graphics card in my rig right now and it plays fine split-screen at 720p with everything except AA enabled. 1080p would be nice but with a baby on the way we're kind of, well, broke(I got Portal 2 for $20 before anyone asks).

I can't wait until tonight to play some more.

I'll be the naysayer. No games are perfect. Even the games I've enjoyed immensely (Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Faction: Guerrillas, Star Control II, and others) have had their issues.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/perfect

I won't argue the subjective underlying premise, but to be clear, I am using perfect in the sense conveyed by the first definition: "conforming absolutely to the description or definition of an ideal type: a perfect sphere; a perfect gentleman." I think you are using it the way most people do, by the fourth definition, which does not describe my intent: "entirely without any flaws, defects, or shortcomings: a perfect apple; the perfect crime."

It's pretty rare that OotB pertains solely to game-playing, and it is likewise pretty rare that I actually buy a game and play it through. Portal 2 is certainly an exceptional game.

Do you know how many chapters are there in the coop campaign? I started playing it with my wife on the PS3 and it is a lot of fun, we aren't through chapter 1 yet, didn't have much time to play it yet.

5 chapters, with 6 to 9 levels in each. I'd say approximately 35 levels to play through.

Perfect, thank you !

I'm exploring everything I can. Any far off wall that has a white patch gets a portal fired on it so that I can explore . I found all 3 things mentioned in the article and more, although I'm sure there is still stuff that I missed. Either way, there's nothing like playing this for the first time.

I was a little disappointed with how easy the puzzles were. There was only one that gave me any trouble and maybe two that I had to actually think about. Everything else was pretty obvious. I loved the story part of the game, but I wish they spent more time on the puzzle side of Portal and didn't try to make it something it wasn't. But I understand you don't make millions making people feel stupid and frustrating them.
