Portal 2 Nears

GLaDOS@Home now shows that computations are still needed for only five more games from the Potato Sack, and the countdown to unlock Portal 2 stands at just under 10 hours. Meanwhile the potato counter is ticking off potatoes at around 20 per second, as the site says it is: "Engaging starch-based power cells." There's indication what that does.

giving people an opportunity to unlock a game early = good

giving people a motivation to help support indy developers = good

dangling a carrot in front of people that basically deceives them into paying for something based on an expected return that was never real to start with = VERY bad

the only way this would have been a win win for everyone is of this had been started a week earlier so that people could actually really unlock the game early.

people can justify this all you want, but in the end all it was, was a dishonest scheme to get people to buy some indy games with absolutely zero actual pay off even possible on the false promise made.

Eh, it looks like I won't be playing much until Wednesday at this point due work...and raiding! So sad.

Hopefully this unlocks much earlier than expected for people - I haven't been watching the other games as much, but The Ball is suddenly making giant leaps forward every few minutes...
Too bad there weren't demos for the two indie games I did look at.
Off to play the dishes game,
Ray
Everything is awesome!!!

I rather wonder why every time a few of the games are complete it deserves its own news post.
Hmm, or maybe it's just that I'm sick of this charade.

I think I will also be happy when all this is over.
Now we donce.

There's the problem, normally you are supposed to have 2 of those things.
Ray Marden wrote on Apr 18, 2011, 18:06:

"Engaging starch-based power cells."
I think what's happening is that valve is "consuming" the potatoes to accelerate the process since people doing it manually wasn't fast enough. Given that this has been in planning for months, this must have always been in mind for the "fudge" factor so that regardless of how much work people did, the game gets released on its always planned time, near midnight tuesday morning.

aka, it was always all a big scam.

I dunno about the consumption of potatoes 'accelerating', as doing a quick calculation, it'd take 7.1 hours for the counter to hit zero (when I did the calculation).

My guess is that it was simply a threshold point to which you can 'guarantee' a release early.

I also don't feel it's a scam, simply because it doesn't hurt anyone if they participate, nor does it force participation.

But valve all along said this was to get it to release "early". Even a few hours ahead of schedule can technically be called "early" even though I think many people were expecting at least a day.
Now indications are that this near midnight time was the planned and scheduled release time all along regardless of how much or little work people did and that there was never going to be an "early" release.

Sounds like a scam to me.

Early is not a subjective statement...the problem is when people start applying subjective reasoning to statements of factual basis.

Early is anything before a specific moment, this could be 1 second to 100 years...it's both still early.

A scam is when you tell someone they can get something early and in reality it comes out at the same time. Or better yet, you tell someone that you must purchase these 13 games and play them to unlock Portal 2 early.

Neither of these are what Valve did. They created a meta-game to increase the chances of the game releasing early. You can opt to participate or not, either way it doesn't affect your ability to obtain Portal 2, either on-time or 'early'.

DRM ftw!

Not exactly DRM, as it's a matchmaking-required game. It's no different from the days when GameSpy would be the predominant matchmaker and have their own issues impeding your ability to play online.

Which I'm saying they did. It comes out at the same time regardless. Accelerated bars now along with potato fudge factor. As I've said in 3 posts now, its always been planned to come out around midnight, regardless of how much or how little work people did to "accelerate" the release.

Those "I'm a nigerian price with 10 million and you get 10% if you help me" emails didn't scam me personally and they are still scams.

This is as close to a victimless moneymaking scam as you can get, but it doesn't make it any less of a scam.

What they scammed me out of was my last lingering faith in valve that remained after the whole L4D series crap that valve screwed people over with and lied about.

Blizzard and Valve used to be 2 of my most respected and admired companies. Almost anything they put out was an automatic buy or pre-order. They've changed now, neither one much cares about the customer anymore, its all about the money, and squeezing all they can out of people. They've grown closer and closer to how EA acts.

Funny, according to the actual clock...6:21 does not make it midnight for Valve (see Pacific Time).

Like all time locks it's based upon the region to which the company resides, in the case of Valve it is Bellevue WA. In 6 hours, it'll be 11pm. Considering the consistency that the clock has been dwindling, I foresee it being even less than that the closer we get to 11pm.

So, again, where is the scam?
