Having the carrot dangled in front of them for so long with no significant payoff is bound to upset a number of people. People don't like to be toyed with.
Ultimately if this gets released early that will be great. But a few hours early on a weekday is not what most people have in mind when you use term "early release", so don't be surprised if some (or a lot of) people end up being cranky over it.
That's the exact problem. When people saw the comment "Help us release Portal 2 early" on a Friday morning, they expect more than 6 hours early on the following Tuesday.
The odds appear stacked so far against steam customers, that unless something is changed soon, it appears that that "early" was pretty much the original intended time to begin with, and there wasn't much of anything they could really do.
Based on that, Valve pretty much earns all the scorn they're getting.
