GameStop Acquiring Impulse

GameStop announces the acquisition of streaming technology company Spawn Labs and an agreement to acquire Impulse, the digital distribution service started by Stardock in 2008. According to GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines: "With these important acquisitions, we will continue to make appropriate investments related to our multichannel strategy. GameStop is uniquely positioned to be the leader in both the physical and digital gaming space." There's also a Stardock Community FAQ about Impulse Acquisition by GameStop on Impulse saying this should not affect users' accounts, they do not foresee any layoffs as a result of this, and this does not impact Stardock or its current development plans, as this is a completely separate business.

There goes all the gamers rights and stuff stardock was trying to promote with Impulse. Gamestop doesn't really care about the gamer. I know stardock can still promote that in their own games, but its not going to have as much influence as promoting it with impulse (for instance sane DRM).

And the most interesting feature to me was the planned Impulse ability to sell "used" digital copies back. I was hoping that would pressure valve into adding something similar to steam. I doubt that feature is going to happen now.

And of course, if gamestop flubs it or changes it into something weird, then steam will have much less competition in the marketplace. Less competition is always bad.

I'm sure this was done partly because of Stardock's financial issues stemming from the problematic launch of elemental. I know the linked news story says it was sold because Impulse was too successful, yet I'm pretty sure financial troubles in stardock was a big reason too.
