GameStop Acquiring Impulse

GameStop announces the acquisition of streaming technology company Spawn Labs and an agreement to acquire Impulse, the digital distribution service started by Stardock in 2008. According to GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines: "With these important acquisitions, we will continue to make appropriate investments related to our multichannel strategy. GameStop is uniquely positioned to be the leader in both the physical and digital gaming space." There's also a Stardock Community FAQ about Impulse Acquisition by GameStop on Impulse saying this should not affect users' accounts, they do not foresee any layoffs as a result of this, and this does not impact Stardock or its current development plans, as this is a completely separate business.

Well, all the worries I had about Gamestop buying Steam are still valid here. Watch for pre-order requirement horseshit or something to start hitting Impulse Real Soon(tm). I also can't wait for Gamestop's vaunted customer service to come calling.

At least they didn't buy Steam. As for their "We're uniquely positioned to be the leader in the digital gaming space": Har har har. That's a funny joke.

I know gamestop makes a shitload of money, but they simply do not have the cash on hand to buy a privately held service like steam from Valve. I'm not even sure if there is a feasible dollar amount Valve would consider for selling steam. It's year-to-year growth since it started has been nearly exponential and there is no sign of that slowing down.

I didn't mean that I was worried that Gamestop might still go and buy Steam. What I meant was that the worries I had about what would happen IF Gamestop bought Steam (service going to shit, games disappearing, horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE customer service, basically Steam turning into a giant pile of festering shit.) are still there for Impulse.

I own about 10 or 12 games on there, so not a huge deal, but still... I'm quite sure that if I change email addresses again without first re-registering my Impulse account, Gamestop will simply tell me "PREORDER OR GTFO!"

This isn't anything ANYONE should be happy about. Gamestop is a worthless piece of shit brick and mortar store, and they'll undoubtedly turn Impulse into a worthless piece of shit digital delivery platform.
