IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Trailer

This launch trailer from IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover shows off 1C: Maddox Games' upcoming combat flight simulator set during World War II's pivotal Battle of Britain. The clip features several different aircraft, and snippets of air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. The clip ends saying the game is due Spring 2011, and a couple of weeks ago Ubisoft announced it is due on April 26. Here's the embedded version.

Yea I can't claim to have first hand knowledge of when a prop is visible or not, it just didn't feel right to not see anything at all. But even when I throttle down you see nothing which I thought was odd. Its one of those things where it may not be accurate but kinda adds to the feel of it. But I wont fault them for it then if thats the way it is.

Except for the flyby and some of the guns, the sounds are the exact same sounds from IL-2. From what I've seen so far, this is just IL-2 with better shadows and water.

Oh yea and the graphics got nerfed in case UBI would be sued by photosensative epiletics. You cant even see a hint of the prop from inside the planes, as in not a HINT. Among other things
I got news for you, unless it's stopped, you don't see the prop anyway, not even at idle/low RPM. About the only time you might see the prop is if the sun hits it at a certain angle you'll catch a glare, but otherwise, when it's spinning, it's pretty much invisible.

You can't even make a quick mission like you could in IL2! They give you some preset missions, but you cant do it like before..I wanna fly this plane against this, this and this. Nope.

Whoa.. That's about all I did in IL2.

I've not been able to test this as it wont recognize my joystick.
From what I've read its been improved slightly over IL2s but that was already pretty good.

The best thing about it is the ocean it looks friggin amazing. The landscape looks cartoony, if you compare that alone to say Birds Of Pretty THATS how I might expect it to be, Im from the UK and I dont remember it being so 'bright' like the wizard of Oz..

I've sort of followed the development of this sim over the years, the early screenshots of the ultra detailed cockpits and the land vehicles with enough detail for a first person shooter.

Given the amount of time they've been working on this you can't really say it was kicked out the door early, but what the hell happened?

It's sacrilege to talk negatively about this title (certainly amongst my flightsim friends..yes I have flightsim friends) - but the screenshots I've seen look very similar to the original IL2. The hud text colour positions are identical, the smoke effect looks the same.. I don't doubt the models are higher res and the textures much better. Not sure what I expected.

The forum posts I've read focus on the graphics. What I'd like to read is how they've managed to improve the physics, the simulation itself.

Still, I don't doubt this will be sorted out eventually. Eastern Euro companies tend to endlessly update their products and IL2 had great support.

Still a shame to see it released in this state after so much build-up one would thing they could get it right.

Wildone is spot on.

No rendered propeller.

Doesn't use more than 2GB of system RAM.

Doesn't use SLI or Crossfire.

Hammers one CPU core incessantly and occasionally sends a few side tasks to the others.

Last time I checked the Battle of Britain wasn't fought by ten or twelve aircraft.

The thickness of your ignorance, it's like a fucking shield that repulses insight.

Yep its pretty much unplayable right now, VERY unoptimized, almost pre Alpha state. 8 gigs of ram isn't enough right now. Will be good in the future though no doubts..but for now..heh..
