Op Ed

MCV - Can we benefit from piracy?
While major publishers shout loudest over their hypothetical losses, common sense suggests that smaller independent studios suffer most from the explosion of piracy. These companies have no cash cushions to fall back on, no assets to sell off, no enormous legal teams to deploy in their defence.

What’s more, they’re often dependent on the internet to publicise and distribute their products, neck-deep in the very medium that gives copyright infringers their power. But those vexing truths cut two ways: the indies are able to adapt swiftly to changing market conditions, and adopt strategies Activision or Ubisoft would deem unthinkable.

Obviously devs need to just admit that piracy's going to happen. The more they tighten their grip, the more star systems... etc. etc.

But. It shocks me that piracy is still so prevalent despite the PC gaming population aging. I pirated games when I was a (poor) jackass teenager, back in the 90s, but as soon as I got a shitty part time job I stopped.

It's not like games are expensive. If it's something that I'm not interested in enough to drop $50--I wait three months for it to be $5 at Micro Center or on Steam.

Edit: This goes for the US. I totally understand why people pirate games in other countries. I probably would, too, if prices were artificially inflated 2-5x for 2 year old games and hardware. Or if, y'know, the average family income were on the order of one game per week.
