IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover Next Month

The Official Ubisoft Online Store now offers an April 26, 2011 release date for IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover, the upcoming Eric Johnson-free combat flight simulator sequel. Here's word on the game's setting in World War II's Battle of Britain: "Fly into the pivotal aerial battle for the skies of Britain. As a member of the British RAF, face off against the deadly German Luftwaffe and the Italian air forces. IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover is the next exciting World War II flight combat simulation title from 1C: Maddox Games, creators of the critically acclaimed IL-2 Sturmovik series." Those who preorder the game will get a free copy of Silent Hunter III. Thanks Larry.

Is it a sad state of affairs that my decision to purchase this game or not hinges squarely on the type of DRM used?

You can indefinitely activate your copy of the game on the same PC. You start with three activations (so, three different PC hardware configurations) to begin with. After one month, one activation will be re-credited (up to a maximum of three available activations at any given time).

If you change your hardware out a lot or roam around on a bunch of different PC's then this could be a problem for you.

What seems to be the biggest issue of contention about the sim is that it uses Steamworks and is tethered to Steam. Many polls on the official forum asking if Steam should be removed from the game etc

If it uses Steamworks, then why the fuck do they need to slap on another DRM scheme to limit activations? This just went on my "wait and see" list. I could go live with one or the other, but both? Besides, IL2-1946 still has plenty of life left in it.

When it comes to the dying genre of flight sims my reservations about DRM relax just a little. I really don't want to see flight sims gone from the market and replaced with console ports of fly-on-rails eye candy kiddie games.

Don't get me wrong though, I will never buy any game with DRM that leaves CPU hogging processes running that don't uninstall when the game is uninstalled.

I think the game should automatically score a 100% if Eric Johnson's 'Cliffs of Dover' plays over the intro.

Maybe its just me but this game looks exactly the same as IL2-Sturmovik...they just added a layer of flair on top of an old graphics engine. Meh...I love flight sims and IL2 was the best of them but after like 5 expansions I can't get excited about another rehash.
