SecuROM in Dragon Age II?

Self-appointed DRM watchdog Reclaim Your Game is apparently reporting on the use of SecuROM DRM in Dragon Age II (the site is currently returning a "403 Forbidden" error), even though this is not disclosed anywhere in the game's packaging or EULA, and BioWare explicitly stated the game would not use SecuROM back in January. According to Vivid Gamer, RYG has stated the following: "We have CONFIRMED from testing that it DOES contain SecuROM, and that it DOES leave files behind. We can also confirm that nowhere on the package, in the EULA or on the Website for the game is thee [sic] ANY mention of the inclusion of SecuROM. EA had been ordered by the courts to disclose the use of SecuROM on any game that uses it. And it is contradictory of what Bioware has been saying for the last 3 weeks." We have reached out to EA for comment on this as well as the report of a player who is unable to activate his copy of Dragon Age II due to being banned on the BioWare forums, but have yet to receive a response. Thanks Destructoid.

I just watched Battle: Los Angeles. In my mind, EA are the invading aliens and gamers are the marines. I can't wait to see the marines give the aliens hell and make them retreat. Burn and die is also an acceptable option

Sorry, but there is some confusion on this. We use Sony Release Control which shares some functionality with other Sony products (SecuROM), but we do not use SecuROM for the DRM. Once the Sony Release Control check is passed, Release Control self-destructs, removing the Release Control wrapper and it is never used again. Game updates will not use Release Control because obviously the release date is passed. Additionally, installing the game and then any future game patch will also remove the Sony Release Control check and it will never run on your computer.

This is very very bad for EA. If someone files charges or a lawsuit I wouldn't be surprised if they added the forum and game bans as well just to add more fuel to the fire.

!!!! That is the third bomb! EA responds to lawsuits by MASS BANNING! If you sue us we'll disable you're game! (and forum access too!!!!)

If I'm not mistaken, corporate law in the US demands criminal charges for disobeying a court order.

This is very very bad for EA. If someone files charges or a lawsuit I wouldn't be surprised if they added the forum and game bans as well just to add more fuel to the fire.

The guys of RYG may end up filing charges or a suit on EA. All I know is that EA is about to live the Chinese definition of interesting times.

The timing of these issues could not have been worse for Bioware. I have spent a lot of time reading reviews and trying to get a feel for what the real game is like and I was coming to the conclusion that while the game wasn't an improvement over the first, it was still something enjoyable so I was checking redbox this morning to see if it was rentable yet...then these nice stories.

But holy crap, using your DRM to punish paying customers, installing Securom in secret (assuming that it's true), I feel like there has got to be a third bomb in this salvo somewhere. So what's next Bioware?

One thing I am relieved about is the little xp glitch, for some random missions on the 360, when you come back to collect your reward for a quest and you press A at the right time and just keep tapping it you apparently earn xp and money...each time you press the A button. Max level right from the start then I should be able to go through the game as fast as possible which sounds like a good idea considering ppl's comments on the repetitive nature of the game.

I liked ME and ME 2 and have no problems with them. But when you go to make a PC Exclusive game (as promised by Bioware), that is a spiritual successor of Baulder's Gate (and to be fair Dragon Age Origins was), and you release the second game in the franchise/series and it's vastly different from the first, what do you expect from the community?

EA has got to be either stupid, or they just don’t give a shit about their users. How did they even begin to think that this wouldn’t come out? Seriously, they knew a hacked copy would be released and those guys would have found Secrom while cracking it. Utterly stupid and carless of EA to think we are all stupid. I think EA thinks that they are so big now that no matter what they do doesn’t matter. This is just another nail in their coffin.

You know I could forgive Bioware for selling out. I knew that I wouldn't be into their games anymore as they were going for style over substance and volume over quality. Hey, it happens if the money is right. And in those cases you just go your seperate ways and remember the good old times. However, now it seems they're turning into a real bunch of scumbags as if they've turned to the dark side thanks to EA. Bannings, prohibiting people from playing games they've purchased, lying to consumers, etc. Well that I take umbrage with and have to join the growing chorus of people who are utterly amazed that a once company once so respected has turned into this bunch of greedy douchebags. Fucking sad, man.

This, I was pissed at myself for actually picking it up at midnight thinking it'd be playable on march 8th in my time zone with a legal retail copy.

Personally I lost most of my respect for Bioware after ME2 was hyped to be this "DARK SECOND CHAPTER!" of the ME Trilogy, and it ended up being playing therapist to your companions for 95% of the game, cue end oversized human terminator end boss fight. ME2 was about as "epic and dark" as a normal run of the mill action game, in other words, it wasn't.

All the dumbing down of DA2 and the dev lies "it won't feel like a console port on pc" Which it does, with dx11 features half assedly tacked on.

They seem to be molding into the EA Collective quite well since selling out. Awakening? Half assed and rushed, DA2? Half assed and rushed. Most EA games? Half assed and rushed. Notice a trend there?

what they need is for a lawer to set up a class action suit and get signup from eveyone who bought the game to sue them for the harmfull and damageing effects to your pc and the harmfull to your health stress of dealing with the problem

Well, they also said DA2 wouldnt be affected by console limitations on the PC and much more. Who cares now about some lied about DRM? They are already liars and after tying unnecessary stuff to DX11, I wouldnt expect anything less of them anyway. They have been assimilated by EA quite well, they might even surpass their master.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

An RYG community manager confirmed (on bio's forum) that this was on the signature edition, and NOT, as Dirwulf keeps bleating, on a preview copy of the game.

So, in short, EA's blatantly lied twice about this game.

As long as you sell 8 million copies it's all cool, right Bio?

Edit : Rumors now abound of it being on the Steam version too.

Edit 2 : And also rumors of it NOT having it. Hehe.

This is awesome. Popcorn Great way to spend a boring friday afternoon at work.
