Gold - Homefront

THQ announces that Homefront is gold, and Kaos Studios' now-complete first-person shooter is on track to meet its promised release dates of March 15 in North America and Europe, March 17 in Australia, and March 18 in the U.K. Word is: "In advance of release, THQ is preparing hundreds of dedicated servers in multiple locations across the globe to support Homefront's epic multiplayer mode." Here's a bit on the game:
2027. A once proud America has fallen, her infrastructure shattered and military in disarray. Crippled by a devastating EMP strike the USA is powerless to resist the ever expanding occupation of a savage, nuclear armed Greater Korean Republic.

Abandoned by her former allies, the United States is a bleak landscape of walled towns and abandoned suburbs. This is a police state where high school stadiums have become detention centers, and shopping malls shelter armored attack vehicles. A once-free people are now prisoners... or collaborators... or revolutionaries.

With all the crappy things the review said, this is the one that jumped out at me:

And with checkpoints rather than quicksave, things repeat.

Homefront: No thanks.

It's heaps long, and annoying with it's shitty flash loading for each page/video. But this is the timeline leading to homefront from the offical site.

Offical Site Timeline

Imo replace North Korea with China and it could happen, especially since China has history with a majority of the Asian countries and would have no issues taking over Korea + Japan + Indonesia + Thailand + Taiwan etc... which would bring ever more cheap labour and electronic know how. Which could then lead to them taking on the mess that is Russia etc...

The world can change quickly, even if it takes 10 years most are blind to see what is coming *cough* WW2

Gahh after 3 edits can't get link to work properly due to the # copy and paste is your friend.

Yeah, I enjoyed the book a lot.. Couple of slow things, but still good IMO. Only problem was it made me want the game more... Plus I'm a big fan of Red Dawn, so the next week and a half is going to suck...

It's too bad they didn't stick with this theme for the multiplayer, where are all these tanks and air strikes coming from if the US military is decimated.

Ah well, it is what it is, the book does sound like a fun read.

I believe that all of the drones were developed and brought over by NK.
Goliath was a US prototype
Just because the US shrunk it's standing army, doesn't mean they had a yard sale with the equipement. The equipment was still around and the NK's snatched most of it... It's mentioned in the book as well that when they started expanding before the attack, they started trainign their soldiers on US equipment... This was also why they didn't need to bring over a lot of heavy equipment themselves right away...

You mean you just can't spout your usual bullshit? oh no!

Well, I guess that's fine so long as guys like you can, right?

Anyway, there's such a thing as context. And so long as people are using off-colour words or phrases in context it shouldn't be a problem. I mean people use the word gay as a derogatory term around here all the time - myself included - and no one bats an eye at that.

The story is really weird. North Korea manages to take over South Korea, China, Japan, and other countries, before invading the USA. If they somehow invented a super powerful technology before doing so (Nanobots! Super mech walkers! Deflector shields!), then it would make more sense.. but the info so far suggests they just got.... really angry. Anger is power!
Just finished the book for this game and it fleshes out the back story pretty decently.... This isn't something where the NK's just wake up one day and say let's invade, there was a lot of planning and a lot of things going wrong in America at the time that helped it along... Some more details as I rememebr them...
Spoilered
  • The US economy takes a much larger dump than it has been.
  • Due to the economy, gas jumps to $20/gallon, which helps result in huge unemployment as people can't afford to get to work.
  • Due to the economy, the US miltary has huge cutbacks and pulls out of almost all oversea areas and shrinks it's standing army
  • NK unites with SK and over time become one of the only nations with a decent economy and the major exportor of new technology
  • They use this and start to slowly take over other areas near them... Since China was relying on the US for econmoy and we stopped buying things, their economy is in the toilet as well
  • The NK lauch some huge cyber attacks on the US when they are ready. Since many PC components are from them, they have built in back doors. They use this to help cripple the military infrastructure.
  • They then hit the US with a massive EMP blast, destroying the majority of electronic components... No cars, no lights, not a single luxury..... Like Robinson Crusoe it's as primitive as can be! But, really lots off things are bad.. no cars for transport, no electricty, so hospitals and everything else is screwed, and total loss of all communications... no cell phones, land lines, radio, tv, etc.... So even if the miltary was at 100% there is no way to communicate... Plus since everyone is down, there is no way for the average person to know if it's local or in a larger area.
  • they then come in on the West coast and spread from there, but do not try to take over the whole country

I thought you were commenting on the multiplayer, yeah the single player has that NPC "squad" thing going on, very seldom does it work very well. I think DICE did a decent job with the single player campaign for Bad Company 2.

Rock Paper Shotgun has a preview of the first few single player levels.

But the first three levels we’ve had access to ensure that you are always in last place. At points this becomes so pettily enforced that you start to feel like the hated kid in class, the one who gets pushed and barged out of the way, even by the nicer kids. If there’s a trapdoor to jump down, a passage to explore, or even doorway to walk through, your two NPC buddies will literally shove you aside to make sure they get through first. If there’s something cool to do, like throw a filing cabinet out of the way, then you just stand there and watch. Want to open a door? Learn your station, scumbag. And tragically, the same counts for cover.

The game has no cover system – it’s the old fashioned “hiding behind stuff”. But inevitably anywhere useful to crouch will be occupied by one of your companions. And unlike most other games of its ilk, they don’t find somewhere else if you try to take the same position. Instead they get territorial and push you back into the line of fire. Not that they’re taking advantage of their stolen tactical advantage. In this preview version at least, they will happily stand with their gun barrel touching an enemy’s head and not fire. The enemies are compliant, because they’re only interested in killing you and not your immortal chums.

It's team based, but not really squad based - there are no support rolls - no medic, no engineer, no ammo support etc. It's no more squad based than any of the Call of Duty games.

It's roving mob against roving mob, you can lone wolf in this game all you want. Yes there is a squad system but it's completely optional and you'll actually need to seek it out in the UI to make any sense out of it.

Not really sure of the difference. I don't play the COD games either. For a shooter... especially in first person... I want it to be "all about me"

I don't want to wait for "dumb AI NPCs" to catch up to me, nor do I want "dumb AI NPCs" wanting me to catch up to them by constantly yelling stupid shit like" "over here!" while I'm trying to explore between waves of combat. More often than not, I just end up wanting to shoot my "poor NPC teammates"

Squad or team play for multi-player... fine... co-op or team vs. team.

But for single player... forget it. (for me, at least)

Did the preorder with hopes this will be a good game that will take my time from CoD. And I got Metro 2033 for free.

It doesn't look as graphically intense as CoD or BF3, so I am hoping more people latch onto this and enjoy it.

Please don't suck!

Looking forward to this... Frontlines has some cool ideas it just lacked polish, so I expect this game to follow-through. I also like that they have said the campaign is following the Half-Life style of narrative.
