I recently mentioned my confusion over the icon next to the URLs in Google Chrome, which seemed to always state the site's identity could not be verified. Someone commented that this is because the identifier only applies to sites with SSL certificates, which turns out to be the case, and is explained here. This makes me feel better about the whole situation, though I don't understand why they even bother to display the icon for regular http connections, but there's probably a good explanation for that as well.
