On PC Bulletstorm

An article on Ars Technica talks about issues with the PC edition of Bulletstorm, the just-released first-person shooter from Epic Games and People Can Fly. This offers some gripes about the PC edition of the game, talking about unreadable text after switching to widescreen mode, lack of in-game graphics adjustments, a framerate lock, the use of Games for Windows LIVE, and more. The good news is they describe how many of these issues can be addressed by messing around in the .ini files, which they describe as "weakly encrypted." They don't actually give details on what to change or how, but say: "The various unofficial forums online have great advice for different video card set-ups. Don't look for critical thoughts on the PC version on the official site, however, as those are getting locked," but a later article offers more tangible suggestions. Thanks Joker961.

actually, sounds like what we've been doing to every Unreal powered game since the original Unreal. Editing the .ini files has become old hat for Unreal veterans. For widescreen support, cachmegs, better OpenGL settings, you name it, we've done it, and we'll do it again.
Consoles are schwag.

All I've had to do through .ini settings is turn off mouse smoothing, everything else I've needed has been available through the in-game menu. It looks good, runs good, and honestly the gameplay is a ton of fun. I picked this up with a D2D sale code for $45 and it's already proving well worth it.

With all of that said, this game has almost everything we hate about shitty ports; right down to a message box (every single damn time!) telling me not to shut the machine off when I see the loading icon. It even enables Auto-Aim and Aim-Assist by default; it's almost enough to make me want to strangle someone with my mouse.

I will say it before others say, the devs don't care enough about the PC version. We wish they cared more but they don't.

Also games for windows live blows big time as usual.

Next time they'll use stronger encryption.

Adrian Chmielarz is People Can Fly's creative director, and he told Ars that the encryption is there to "prevent people from cheating on Echoes and Anarchy Leaderboards," most likely by keeping them from adjusting certain aspects of enemy behavior or power. That's perfectly fair, but they left too many of the game's core settings locked behind the encryption—which is too weak to have kept anyone from the files for more than a few minutes anyway. "Possibly we should separate .ini files: some encrypted, some (visuals, mouse, etc.) open to rape," he continued via Twitter. "Oops, I mean edit."

Hey, is this Adrian dude trying to tread onto Cliffy's turf?

yeah buddy, people are raping your game alright.

Pretty sure you're way wrong on that, DangerDog.
The game has been accused of leading to rape, and he's making a poor joke on that, not saying PC gamers rape the game...

Here's the funny thing: The leaderboards are already broken. Some guy only has 21 medals and has the top score, which is 69,696,969. You know, whereas I have about 150K points and 36 medals and rank 56th on the boards.

I thought it was funny, but it goes to show you how futile it was.

I just want the damn letterboxes in 16:10 resolution removed.

Oh wow. Another "feature" not mentioned in the above is that mouse smoothing is on by default, and can't be turned off without decrypting the INI file.

For those of you unfamiliar with badly done console ports, mouse smoothing attempts to recreate the sluggishness of an analog stick by ignoring any quick mouse movements. If you have the reflexes to aim quickly, the game will fix that for you.

eh, no it's an affront to guys like this for people to make changes to their game - that's why they encrypted the .ini files in the first place, the idea of trying to prevent people from cheating is a complete joke.

In either context it's a stupid thing to say and just encourages the hate mongering against Epic/People Can Fly/EA.

While there's some fun moments, the game is too tightly controlled and linear to be a spiritual successor to Painkiller. Perhaps if Epic had let PCF do their own thing we would have a much better game but Epic simply overproduced the shit out of this thing to the point that they might as well have made a lightgun game. Some of the dialogue is quite funny and there's a spot of brilliance when you get the the level where you take control of a rather cool toy but other than that its more a rental than a keeper.

On what difficulty? I'm sick of whiners about game length and playing it on easy or medium. Now, if it is only 5 hours on hard then that is BS.

Phew, when I saw "framerate lock" in the topic, I thought the game would be locked at 30 FPS, as some shitty console ports are prone to do. Luckily, I find 62 FPS perfectly acceptable.

Look, if you are a tweeny 12-13 year old boy hitting puberty this game is for you! It is so unbelievably stupid it's almost funny. It is a decent port, it runs fine but there are a few more tweaks some may want but it's not worth bitching and whining about like the typical PC fanboy is expected to do (expected by CliffyB anyway). I don't think it's worth the $60.00 I paid for it on Steam but at $40.00 it would've been more on target. I have to play the game in 15 min segments because it just starts to get under my skin and after a break I can tolerate it again (for another 15 mins). Maybe I'm getting too old for this type of humor and gameplay but it sure doesn't appeal to me like it's suppose to.
