Valve: Portal 2 "Finished"

A Video Conference with Gabe Newell has the Valve managing director addressing a Sports/Entertainment marketing class about the game business. The clip runs about 40 minutes and covers Valve's history and their work. One noteworthy moment is noted on Computer and Video Games (via GamerZines), where they highlight Gabe saying development of Portal 2 is complete, even though the first-person puzzle sequel is not due for release until the week of April 18. "We just finished Portal 2," Newell told the students. "It's pretty much put to bed and we're just waiting for final approvals and to get the discs manufactured."

Yup, already pre-ordered. I just fired up Portal today for fun, only to realize that during one of the major Steam updates play stats were all reset. So now I have to get all the achievements again...

Also, I'd swear that those radios weren't there before.

Send the game off to me Gabe & I will approve it.

I'm off to work now but will expect to see it on my steam account tonight.

My approval will be in the form of a coded message.
"The chickens get restless when the farmer combs his hair"

This will be posted within the steam portal 2 forums sometime this week.

Let's keep this to ourselves big guy.

This has to do with one of the newer achievements put in, I think...

P.S. Unrelatedly, just played through The Neverhood again last night... have to say that while the game has aged graphically, it's still tons of fun to go through.

Maybe they're going to bundle it up with Ep3 and that's what's taking the time? Sigh, one can only hope.

Well, we all know they're working on the next game period.

Personally, the nicest thing would be if they just scrapped any "episode 3" mindset and jumped straight into HL3 - new engine, new story, a full game, etc.
Or should I say HL4 since we've already seen 2/3 of HL3? Lulz.
Episodic gaming still have potential, but only when they can actually make it episodic - short wait, decreased price, a few hours of high quality gampley, etc.

Hoping the next game is more than just "Run, Gordon, run!,"

I'm willing to bet this is exactly what they've already done. Valve has shown in the past that they'll re-do an entire game if they feel the need--just look at TF2.

I've been saying the same thing for years. They dropped the episodic structure entirely and are making HL3 with an all new engine, etc. I think when they finally announce it all us Valve fans will be jumping for joy.

Sounds like the old software development axiom: you can have it fast, cheap and good: pick any two.

How's plasticine age? Does it look too low res now or something? I loved that game. Had to hunt for it on eBay though. Came out a bit before my PC days started.

I really hope Portal 2 doesn't disappoint but, pessimistic as I am, how can you top the original? Bah, it's Valve, it'll be great.

So I wonder where all those people are that bitch about games costing more than they 'should'... Because holy hell, Portal 2 is not something I would pay fifty (or forty, thirty, etc) bucks for...

And yes, that's not actually based on Portal 2... It's based on the first one, that did just about nothing revolutionary, and was way the hell overhyped : )

I do hope you all enjoy it though : )

This game is a lot longer than the original, plus it has a coop campaign. That makes the value about right (unless you don't like the series much, but that's a whole separate issue).
