Valve: Portal 2 "Finished"

A Video Conference with Gabe Newell has the Valve managing director addressing a Sports/Entertainment marketing class about the game business. The clip runs about 40 minutes and covers Valve's history and their work. One noteworthy moment is noted on Computer and Video Games (via GamerZines), where they highlight Gabe saying development of Portal 2 is complete, even though the first-person puzzle sequel is not due for release until the week of April 18. "We just finished Portal 2," Newell told the students. "It's pretty much put to bed and we're just waiting for final approvals and to get the discs manufactured."

Uh, you do realize that Portal has a very extensive mod community with tons of great maps?

Played about 12 or so levels of Prelude. Really liking it so far, also the voices aren't nearly as "bad" as the comments have made it seem.

Thanks for the links!

Preordered it once it appeared, uncontrollable nerve impulse.
I really hope it can live up the hype.
I foresee that finding a good coop partner will be the key...

It depends on how the files were packaged. For individual maps, you usually just extract the files to your \Steam\SteamApps\<steamid>\portal\portal directory. Most maps and mods come with readme files that explain how to install them so if you're not sure, see if there's a readme file.

If I just download one map, do I just place it in my steamapps folder? Or the portal folder? Apparently neither. I'm a noob when it comes to playing mods/extra maps on portal. If anyone could help explain to me how to play downloaded maps that would be excellent.

Personally, the nicest thing would be if they just scrapped any "episode 3" mindset and jumped straight into HL3 - new engine, new story, a full game, etc.

I'm willing to bet this is exactly what they've already done. Valve has shown in the past that they'll re-do an entire game if they feel the need--just look at TF2.

This is what pisses me off. I don't want a new engine, I want the game to be completed before the game is 20 years old....so frustrating. It has been proven time and time again, that a great story, great gameplay, etc etc etc trumps pretty shit everytime.

Just finish the damn story so we can move on...

Yup, already pre-ordered. I just fired up Portal today for fun, only to realize that during one of the major Steam updates play stats were all reset. So now I have to get all the achievements again...

Also, I'd swear that those radios weren't there before.

The achievement update and the radio update are pretty old.. I noticed that before the achievements were out i had played the game 2x already, and the achieves came out for my 3rd playthrough, and like previous steam games, they give you the achieves as they were already collecting data, but the achievs weren't out yet....so you should have auto got them when you fired up the game....

I have a couple radios to get and then done.

Why aren't people melting down?

I guess we're just used to getting shafted by multiplatform development. Dragon Age was delayed for almost a year so they could work on the console versions.

This game is a lot longer than the original, plus it has a coop campaign. That makes the value about right (unless you don't like the series much, but that's a whole separate issue).
