No Bulletstorm Editor

The Epic Games Forums have word not to expect an editor for Bulletstorm when Epic's and People Can Fly's upcoming first-person shooter is released (thanks BeyondUnreal). Word is:
Hey folks, sorry it took a while to get back to you here.

In Bulletstorm, we would have had to make modifications to the Unreal Editor to account for the skillshot system. We spent years developing the skillshot system and carefully balancing weapons, and it was a resource matter - make an editor we can ship with the game or keep polishing Bulletstorm for release.

Epic maintains the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) for people who would like to work with our game development toolset. We regularly release free, updated versions that include the latest additions to the engine. UDK *is* Unreal Engine 3 - plus it comes with sample content that can be used to make standalone games. Epic's engine team makes hundreds of improvements to the engine every month and UDK is the best way for developers to keep on top of the latest technology. UDK ships with the gorgeous visual features seen in Bulletstorm - Unreal Lightmass global illumination, light shafts (a.k.a. god beams), dynamic lighting and shadowing, and so much more.

UDK is a more current version of UE3 anyway, so while it sucks to not be able to have a level editor mods would be better off building themselves in UDK and being totally independent of any other release.

Bah. One of the great things about Painkiller was the engine. Oh well, at least we get light shafts! Oh boy!

Wow, what a bullshit excuse. I can understand locking off the single player portion but to not allow multiplayer mapping and modding is a joke. Just be honest and say that they want to sell DLC map packs if the game is successful enough to warrant releasing them for the PC, or if Microsoft doesn't fork over a bunch of money to make DLC xbox exclusive.

I suspect we'll see a similar announcement from Crytek regarding not allowing the sandbox editor to be released for Crysis 2 - just because you see it in the beta leak doesn't mean it'll be there either at release or after, just like LAN play won't be in the retail build either.

Well have fun with your stale maps and DLC, Bulletstorm gamers!

The lack of a PC demo kept me away. Too bad, this game had potential for a fun shooter.

I guess there'll always be Duke.... so weird to say that.

You've neither played the demo nor paid attention to how they're doing multiplayer, have you?

No PC demo, haven't played it. Watched too many videos of it though, I assume multiplayer will be player hosted games via Games for Windows Live since it's only 4 player, and it's just against waves of enemies. *yawn*

But still, some sort of editor could have opened it up to having some more fun with the game. The game is going to go straight to the bargain bin.

I get the feeling like this statement is just stalling for time. Would almost be willing to bet money they somehow turn a 180 on this when they see sales aren't what they hoped.

Shame, really... I agree with DangerDog, an editor for a game like this could be all sorts of twisted fun.

More disappointment. Sounds like it may just be more excuses for dev's to ensure no competition for their over-priced DLC to me.

Why would they spend resources to release an editor for a console centered game created for the purpose revenue generation in the period before gears of war 3 comes out? Also tools interfere with paid DLC content.

Yay! Another overpriced console single player experience, and now they have the nerve to cut the only remotely interesting part of this game.

This wasn't created for those purposes and you do a huge injustice to PCF saying that.

Gears 3 was slated for a Holiday 2010 release. This was slated for after. There is no possible way your logic works based on that.

Now granted, he implied he was kidding, but plenty of people say things sincerely and then say they are kidding to avoid fallout, so~ I take that aspect of it with a grain of salt, He seems to love busting the balls of fanboys though so, it could certainly be one or the other. Or both.

Seriously though... I don't understand what all these shooter devs lately are pulling this no editors crap.

Are they totally oblivious to Bethesda?

Morrowind - Included a rich deep editor, sold expansions. Game and expansions sold buttloads

Oblivion - Included a rich deep editor, They sold Expansions and DLC, game, exp, DLC all sold extremely well.

Fallout 3/New Vegas - Exact same story as Oblivion

Seriously these games are GOTYs, sold millions, made millions more in expansions and DLC. You'd think other companies would pick up on this, I guess they are just lazy.

I read this as, "We can't keep a straight face during this, and we don't want to tell you that we are going to release a ton of DLC that you will need to pay for - but this is the best we can come up with without telling you we want to nickel and dime you to death, and then we will release BulletStorm 2 in 8 months."
