Commercial Dear Esther Plans

A remake of Thechineseroom's Half-Life 2 modification Dear Esther will be released on Steam as a commercial game this summer, reports GameSetWatch. "The new version of Dear Esther will take the game to a completely new level and we're confident it will be one of the stand-out indie titles of 2011," says creator Dan Pinchbeck. "Once again, this shows that games are probably the most exciting and innovative medium on the planet right now, and we're really happy to be right at the cutting edge of that."

I found the original version very interesting. I've been following the development of the remake and it looks very impressive but I'm not sure how much I'd get out of it as it appears to be just a polish up. I may get it anyway, just as a thank you for the first. We'll see how it's priced.

I thought the original was an interesting experiment and I don't want to start an old argument but was an excellent example of games as art. Don't really see it as appropriate for a commercial product but I guess I'll have to wait and see how they "bring it to a completely new level."

The play-through value was about as fun as watching grass grow after the first ten minutes or so. The "story" was also okay - for a game. If it were in a book it'd be stuck in a romance/adventure novel section complete with Fabio cover.

Good for a mod. I can't see myself paying for it unless they add a novel, fun, game mechanic ala Portal.

Those who enjoyed Dear Esther, I also recommend Korsakovia if you haven't tried it yet.

For just a simple remake, which serves as a promotion tool for a freelancers level building skills ... no, i wont buy it, although it does look very impressive.

If there is more than just a graphic overhaul, if there is actually gameplay, i might spare a few dollars.
