Steam Screenshots Beta

A thread on the Steam Users' Forums announces the availability of a new beta version of the Steam client. A number of changes are included, most notably a new feature allowing players to take screenshots within any game that uses DirectX 9 or later, with screenshots being saved to the steam cloud. This forum thread hosts discussions of this new feature. To check out the beta, follow these instructions: "To access the Beta, go to File -> Settings. On the Account tab press the Change... button to open the Beta Participation dialog. Then Select Beta Update, and allow Steam to restart itself." Thanks Jeromy.

TF2/L4D mic support is fine.

No, it isn't Vent, but it doesn't have to be.

Yeah I was going to say, a lot of people just have terrible mics and headsets.

Not Steam, in Source games. But yeah, that's probably most of it. That and my being accustomed to the higher quality in Mumble and Ventrilo. I have talked to some friends in both Steam and other programs, and Steam is definitely less pretty, but still usable.

Yeah I have had a very solid 5.1 speaker setup now for some 10 years, with the rear speakers mounted on the wall directly behind me.
Probably the most I have been impressed with sound wise in a game was just recently, Medal of Honour Tier 1 multiplayer.
Its the pigs tits for weapon sounds & such.

The G35's I will only ever use for Lanning, however if a game supports them well enough to beat out my 5.1 then they will get used in singleplayer.

A friend of mine has those and commends the 7.1 virtualization which is pretty rare to hear, most people tend to say those fake surround effects are awful. I'll have to check them out sometime!

Uhhh no, what people SAY is that ACTUAL 5.1 headphones sound like shit because they DO. Stereo phones + DH or CMSS3D is universally accepted as the better alternative to 5.1 phones.

There's nothing fake about HRTF and usually gives you much better surround than typical home surround speaker setup.

Also not true at all. As much as I like (or rather, people with whom I live like) my headphones, they can't compete with the sound stage of a proper speaker system. And it doesn't help that audio design in games gets far less attention than it deserves. I can count on one hand the number of times I've been genuinely impressed with video game audio design/implementation.

I'm picking up a pair of 7.1 logitech G35s today.
Friend just got a pair & I was impressed considering they are'nt all that expensive.

I just ordered a pair of these today off Amazon. I'm getting rid of my Steel Series HV2 that work perfectly fine if anyone is interested send me a message.

Yah I get annoyed when people say virtualization is fake surround. There's nothing fake about HRTF and usually gives you much better surround than typical home surround speaker setup. Which is why I always tell people to not cheap out on sound cards.

(edit: i guess you don't need a quality soundcard if you have a usb headphone that does virtualization in software - nevermind)

I got a set of Corsair HS1, I use it for in game chat and Skype and everyone says I sound fine. So far what I've seen (heard) when people have shitty internet connection or they use a cheap shit mic then you can barely hear them. Most times those 2 conditions go hand in hand.

Yeah I was going to say, a lot of people just have terrible mics and headsets. A bunch of people in our steam group all have the same headset(Steelseries Siberia V2) and we all sound fine on steam voicechat.

Was never a problem for me. It wasn't Skype but it was still damned good. Most of the quality problem came from dipshits that do not know how to configure their mic or they have a POS mic.

This also increases bandwith cost.

Just FYI this functionality has been in Xfire for years, is already stable there, and it even includes support for video recording and automatic uploading of video in the same way. Can even do live video streaming from inside your game using Xfire.

Nice for Steam to get this feature though

This is an awesome idea

It was one of the best ideas in Halo 3. It makes taking hysterical screenshots and sharing them much easier.
If only more games also had the replay feature that did.

Having the screenshots save to the Steam servers sounds like a headache as far as disk space is concerned.

There is an 1024Mb limit, so yeah this feature will not replace Fraps anytime soon, but it is a nice feature regardless.

It works pretty well too, and you can post those pictures on your profile. I am pretty sure video feature will be next, but I am not sure how the videos will work with the cloud support. Videos are much bigger to just upload them like that.

Anyways so far so good for the picture feature.
