Magicka #1 on Steam, Bug Hunt Continues

Paradox Interactive announces that Magicka has sold over 30,000 copies since its release yesterday, saying this makes Arrowhead Studios' action/adventure the number one bestselling game on Steam over that period. They also reaffirm their commitment that began with yesterday's patch to clear up bugs and other issues, saying: "However, the fantastic success of Magicka is not a signal for the development team to pop open the jars of mead and relax after celebrating. Arrowhead Studios is working around the sundial and is fully committed to ongoing support by zapping glitches and communicating with players. The dev team has plenty more to conjure up so be on the lookout for more announcements and keep those wands ready, wizards!"

BTW people that can't use "MIDDLE MOUSE" button, you've probably got your logitech software set to webscroll, or universal scroll or something like that.

Set it up "OTHER" -> " MIDDLE MOUSE"

that should fix it

or you can rebind it to another key if you got the latest patch

PLEASE DO NOT PIRATE THIS GAME - ITS ONLY $10 and ITS EPIC AND AWESOME AT THE SAME TIME

I've totally ignored it because the name is ridiculously generic. It makes it sound like the most bland game possible. It's like naming a FPS "Health" or a sports game "Ball." It's hard not to see the name in the Blues headlines and not assume that insane lack of creativity didn't spread throughout the entire game.

That's the point, to be as generic as possible as a parody to the fantasy genre.

Bought 3 copies for my home LAN. I've been dying for a game like this.

How does that work on Steam? Do you need a different Steam account for every local copy? That must be... frustrating.

Well, I have 5 comps all with their own Steam accounts networked that my kids and wife use. Normally it would be aggravating to have to buy 3 separate copies, but given that the game is a measly 10 bucks, it still ends up being cheaper than a single copy of most games.

Yeah, I gotcha. I'm not knocking buying multiple copies (though I fondly remember the games that let you have a few multiplayer-only copies for every actual-disc-copy that you had), it would just make me mad to manage multiple Steam accounts that way. I mean, it's just me here, but I could conceive of setting up a second or third computer for when folks visit.

Once it's been fixed up, should I definitely buy it? The general consensus seems to be that, while it does have problems, it's also crazy fun when it works.

That about it?

Yes. The patches are making progress too.

This is a must-buy for everyone. The MP is insanely fun.

Things changed, Paradox isn't the piss poor little niche inhouse only developer anymore. They have enough success and money to take much more time to produce their next major inhouse title CK2, then ever before. And they spend money on several experiments, as seen during their recent convention/press conference.

So money is no excuse, they just wanted to push the title on the market in time. That is also the reason why they didn't include everything they wanted yet, as confirmed for "Paradox Connect" for example.

you have to remember that a lot of indie developers aren't backed by an "ea" style company and don't have wads of cash.

they might already be in debt and need to release to get money to even make the patches.

I'm not saying that its an excuse to release a buggy game (especially when multiplayer is so stuffed!!!) but thats the reality.

The Single player works fine for me, if just a touch laggy in spots. The multiplayer, however, is a trainwreck.

It's still worth $10, but for anyone who hasn't picked it up I'd say wait a few weeks.

Since the retail box edition comes out February 15th I am surprised they didn't just release all editions on that day, if it is as buggy as you guys say. Maybe that was the plan but they needed some cash immediately for one reason or another and rushed it out the door.

So how long is the game? I'm close to pulling the trigger. The demo seemed kinda fun, and for $10, it's hard to lose.

The meat of the game is in the fun MP co-op. Wait a week or so, if the daily patches keep coming in, at that point the game may be stable enough to be really enjoyed as MP. As for SP, it might take you about 10 hours or so, probably more if you like exploring and messing around with the spells.

I do agree with the arstechnica article though. Mainstream or indie, we must regard games in the same light when it comes to buggy products. Magicka either had an incompetent group of testers, the developers didn't care or both. This game could have used thorough beta testing and a couple more months to iron the bugs out.

Even if the game is $10, or even $1, a broken buggy game in the end is a broken buggy game. Thankfully this game has so much potential that people are easier to forgive, I guess.

Yeah I agree, indie or not it's unacceptable and I've said as much on their forums and told others to avoid purchasing this for now.
