Salem, A F2P Permadeath MMORPG Announced

Reporting from a Paradox Interactive press conference, a story on PC Gamer has details on Salem, a newly announced free-to-play MMORPG set in New England during the colonial era when suspected witches were used as firewood. They say the game is due sometime this year, and they make note of a fascinating aspect of the game's concept, permadeath: "The game puts emphasis on a player-driven world that promotes crafting skills. Even more interesting, when your character dies he’s gone forever, leaving all your creations to be pillaged by other players." A Salem video interview with Bjorn Johannessen explains how this works. The trailer also follows.

And griefers can be dealt with in all kinds of ways from the players and the game itself. One of the MUDs used an automated system so that the more evil points a player racked up - attacking other players, and more for killing them, and yet more for looting them - would give them several flags starting with WANTED all the way up to OUTLAW. So not only were players allowed to attack them on site with out taking any evil points themselves the game would send out mobs after them to harry and attack them from time to time as well. If you managed to get to OUTLAW you were pretty much doomed as the game would send out ninjas after you and you were walking billboard to be attacked by everyone else. This kept the griefing quotient in check quite well.
Thats such a cool idea. I wish other things would implement that for griefers, even non perma-death ones. Like in left 4 dead, excessive suicides and team shooting could raise a flag.
