Salem, A F2P Permadeath MMORPG Announced

Reporting from a Paradox Interactive press conference, a story on PC Gamer has details on Salem, a newly announced free-to-play MMORPG set in New England during the colonial era when suspected witches were used as firewood. They say the game is due sometime this year, and they make note of a fascinating aspect of the game's concept, permadeath: "The game puts emphasis on a player-driven world that promotes crafting skills. Even more interesting, when your character dies he’s gone forever, leaving all your creations to be pillaged by other players." A Salem video interview with Bjorn Johannessen explains how this works. The trailer also follows.

And griefers can be dealt with in all kinds of ways from the players and the game itself. One of the MUDs used an automated system so that the more evil points a player racked up - attacking other players, and more for killing them, and yet more for looting them - would give them several flags starting with WANTED all the way up to OUTLAW. So not only were players allowed to attack them on site with out taking any evil points themselves the game would send out mobs after them to harry and attack them from time to time as well. If you managed to get to OUTLAW you were pretty much doomed as the game would send out ninjas after you and you were walking billboard to be attacked by everyone else. This kept the griefing quotient in check quite well.
Thats such a cool idea. I wish other things would implement that for griefers, even non perma-death ones. Like in left 4 dead, excessive suicides and team shooting could raise a flag.

Interested in seeing how this turns out. This might actually qualify for the "RPG" part of "MMORPG" with its long-term consequences and ability to change the world for everyone. People are understandably concerned about griefers but like the dev said, I believe the game will be moderated by those who play it.

Yeah, that was the claim for UO too. And that worked out -so- well...for the griefers. Not quite so well for the floods of customers leaving due to the frustration of being forced to be unwilling targets for trash-talking exploiters.

Leaving the policing of griefers up to the player community can work, but the only places I've seen it work are small communities. Once you pass about the 250 player mark, it all falls apart.

I know what "in development" means, but no concept art or video? Do they _want_ us to assume it's "Minecraft: Witchcraftyness"?

Probably more like UO, though.

edit: I just looked at the Heaven & Hearth forums and it looks like two programmers are going to be working on both games for a few months, then expect to be done with Salem and back to H&H.

Which means it will either be a reskinned H&H (isometric tile-based game NOW WITH 3D OBJECTS!) or they are completely nuts. In either case, don't get your expectations up.

Something I only just realised, but these guys *are* Haven and Hearth. This is their next project.

They have 2+ years of experience running a game like this, they know how to make the mechanics so that griefing is minimal.

Ugh, from the press conference.

Salem takes place in a “light-hearted gothic setting with a charming and cute art-style.”

Damn, and I was excited there for a minute.

Somehow, in a game type where griefing tends to occur quite frequently, I don't think that permadeath is going to go over so well...

Creston

I used to MUD on permadeath MUDs back in the day and it was awesome. Same thing with the Diablo Ironman servers. In Most MMOs there are generally enough people around calling for alternate ruleset servers, with things like permadeath, to make it worthwhile.

In this case I'd tweak to give the character X number of lives between levels (say 3 for argument sake) to account for lag and other problems out of your control. So, as long as you make it to your next level, than your lives reset and off you go again. Also, allowing people to keep a portion of their XP (say 25%) helps soften the blow of rerolling. While it is painful, it's also brings forth the new challenges that go with it. The focus isn't the end-game, it's getting there.

Somewhere, some long term griefer is in an orgasm induced coma after watching this video.

Totally(Mostly?) player built world, extensive crafting, only to be able to kill those people who put hundreds of man hours into their items PERMANENTLY? Rofl.

Not sure how far off this game is, but I expect it to collapse under the weight of truly epic pking/griefing when it finally is released.

I am playing a game similar in concept, Haven and Hearth. Permadeth for characters, with the new incarnation having its stats reset but you keep 25% of the skills and experience points (or 75% depending on a certain setting). Both mobs and players can attack and kill you, but for players to do so they have to purchase an expensive skill.

It works out fairly well. If there's a notorious murderer, you can appeal on the forum to Rangers - strong players who can track down and kill a murderer.

Fairly small (3-5 thousand, only ~1k at once) playerbase, very large world.

I'll keep my eye on this one.
