On Standalone Fallen Enchantress

The Elemental War of Magic Website has further details on Fallen Enchantress, the recently announced follow-on to Elemental War of Magic. In this update Brad Wardell stresses that while Fallen Enchantress will be free to owners of Elemental who purchased the game last year, they actually consider this a new game (thanks Big Download). Here's a bit on why they are going this route, which also mentions that the eventual third installment in the Elemental series will also be free for those who bought Elemental before October 2010:
There is also another advantage to Fallen Enchantress being its own game rather than an “expansion pack”. And that is, it frees the team to make radical changes to the basics of the game while allowing War of Magic to still be updated on its own source tree. A user of Fallen Enchantress won’t have to have War of Magic to play it and can treat War of Magic as a separate game.

This will be the same case for the third entry in the Elemental world which won’t be out for a long time still (but will be free for people who got War of Magic before the end of October 2010). It’ll be its own game as well not requiring War of Magic and Fallen Enchantress but be available at a sharp discount to those who have the previous entries in the game world.

Do they really think people will buy this? I can see it standing alone in the bargain bin not long after release.

It will be interesting to see who the publisher for Sins Of A Solar Empire II will be. Did Stardock nail Ironclad down before all the poop hit the fan? Will Stardock be able to sign any new developers now they have shown twice in a row that they are apparently incompetent at project management and quality assurance?

I don't see how this has anything to do with publishing games. The fault here was with development, not publishing. They had two series wins with Galactic Civilizations and SoaSE, not to mention the desktop apps. I'm sure they will be fine down the road.

My new plan for how to win every fight:

Create one mage. Surround it with archers:

AA
MA
AA

(wall is back-left). The enemy always targets the mages and won't be able to path to it. This causes them to skip turns. Archers kill everything without moving.

The last patch did nothing for AI that I can see.

I have yet to play Elemental, but I've been keeping an eye it. Despite it flaws, I think it has some great ideas. Stardock is dedicated to making it a great game.

Then wouldn't they have made it a great game first before releasing it in it's horrible state?

Assuming they bring this game to the level it was supposed to be, the original buyers are getting a great deal here. Two free expansion packs is a bold move, I wonder how much of a profit they can make off this considering its niche status and given that a large portion of those interested already purchased the original.

I hope one day they can get this product up to the point it deserves. We are going on six months since release and it is still basically in beta - they pretty much admit it. They are making huge changes to the mechanics, the interface, and the AI. That's what you do.... in beta.

I never had major problems with bugs, didn't mind the interface once I got used to it, but it drove me crazy that the AI never did anything. It is apparently now multi-threaded which should help in the future, but it is still really stupid --- six months after release!

I'll never buy a Stardock developed product again before release or at release. Wait for the reviews. That probably also applies to anything they publish.

I am thinking Fallen Enchantress is suppose to be that great revamped game. I hope they succeed. I will continue keeping an eye on this updated Elemental. Hopefully I don't have to wait until the third edition to finally play a good game.
