Arx Fatalis Patch, Source Code Released

The Bethesda Blog announces the release of a new patch for Arx Fatalis, the first-person RPG developed by Arkane Studios. Word is: "The patch brings the game up to version 1.21, fixing stability on Windows 7 and Windows Vista machines, performance issues on Nvidia GPUs, and a number of other things that improve play in 2011." They are also now offering the game's source code under the GNU General Public License (GPL), though making use of this requires a full commercial copy of the game (which is still sold on Steam for $4.99 and on GOG.com for $5.99). The patch and the source code are both available for download on the Arkane Studios Website.

Steam version is updated to 1.21. Seems like steam is still the way to go. Just launched mine to make sure.

The patch works on any version of the game dude, and only yours has DRM.

The patch wouldn't apply to the steam version dude, and I'm perfectly happy with the steam DRM. That's exactly what alot people are upset about, you already have a fantastic delivery and account system, there's no need to tack on other DRM. As far as GOG goes it's a great idea, if I didn't already own the games or get them cheaper and up to date on steam. If you don't want steam and want a limited selection of older games stick with what you like. I was just pointing out to the steam haters that it was already updated on steam the same day.

To be honest, i usually lost interesting in Arx Fatalis in the cave with the spider "queen" - you had to sneak around and sneaking is horrible messed up in Arx, anyhow...

Just saying Besides that i definitely agree with that list of Adventures, but obviously i would also add Risen to that, as well as Two Worlds 2. Even Arcania and Gothic 3 (with community patches) are a half decent RPG's.

Is this the game that GOG.com paid the developers to make a new compatibility patch, which ended up being GOG-exclusive? I seem to recall that being a sore point with folks who bought it elsewhere, so this is a nice resolution.
I wasn't aware of GOG paying Arkane to patch the game (which is not to say it didn't happen), but the rest is certainly true.

Based on comments made by folks at Arkane, though, I don't believe they ever intended v1.19 to be exclusive to GOG. I think that a project they were working on around that time was unexpectedly cancelled (or put on hold at least), which must have caused free work on an Arx patch to become rather a low priority, until they got things back on track.

I'm glad they've finally got things sorted out, and the source code is a real unexpected bonus. Hopefully Arx will live on for a long time as a result of that.

Is Arkane owned by Bethesda, I've forgotten or missed the news, heh.

This is great news finally there can be some fixes or mods, it's a good classic with lots of room for followup since Arx 2, sadly hasn't been released yet.

Oh hells to the yes, but I was just going fantasy. There are another 1/2 dozen solid single player Realtime 3D RPG's in general I would do before Arx. But that said, a lot of us have played nearly them all. Just sayin...

Before Dark Messiah of Might and Magic showed up, this was my favorite First Person Sworder. As the spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld it was supposed to be, it was a bit lacking but otherwise a great game on its own regard.

This was an decent Fantasy RPG.

I would say if you haven't played the following yet, go with one of them. If you played those, then I can see it.

In No particular order...
Divinity 2 DKS
Witcher
Fable LC
Gothic 2 NOR
Dark Messiah
Oblivion

Probably missing a couple more, then a notch down is Arx. Personally I thought this game always had a bit more hype around it vs what it gives back. Starts good and sort of fizzles.

System Shock 2 is another FPRPG that should be played. A little harder to locate a copy though; I think I had to find a copy from Australia for sixty bucks.

Great game, really immersive. I'm glad to see it's still got support.

I still have my old CD copy, but if I was buying it new (and you should if you don't already have it), then GOG would be the way to go.

Very cool. Maybe now I'll actually play through this. Had this game for years, but it's one of those that I start, then forget about for months, only to start it again, and, of course, forget about it again. Now just have to wait for it to be updated through Steam as this patch won't apply to the Steam version

One of THE best first person RPG I've ever played. With the source code out I wonder if anybody will try to start a Stygian Abyss total conversion... probably not.

Really cool news! I skipped picking this up in GOG's christmas sale, but I think I might need to go grab it now.

And it's always great news to hear about a game being open-sourced. Even better insurance of future compatibility and cross-platform support. I look forward to being able to play it in Linux or on a cell phone, probably by next week at the rate they usually port these things.
