Heh, ok. Though I definitely bought the PC version at launch and still think having to unlock multiplayer maps in a first person shooter is pretty silly.

It was less a contest between the three platforms and more a marketing ploy.

Either way it looks like DICE won.

This reminds me of when there was a fuckup with one of the CoD games and Valve gifted people a copy of L4D2. God that sucked... assholes constantly running off and 'one man army' the game when it is severely team biased.

Not to mention the '^1L33t^8O^2W^9N^7Z^4U' nicks that flooded the game servers.

I was about to ask the same thing, this is Battlefield, not a racing game.

The Community Challenge was won by the PC players who managed to reach the 69 million mark first of all three platforms.

But, since we want to start this new year with a big of a bang as we ended it, we are enabling Operation Hastings for the PS3 and Xbox 360 as of today!

Thanx for unlocking that map for us PC gamers! You rock! Can't wait to see what you unlock for us in BF3!

While KB&M vs Controller is a big part of PC vs Console the other major thing is horsepower. Current gen consoles are now ages behind PC's in the relm of power and RAM. Games also have to be dumbed down because of system requirements alone.

Add to this the fact that almost all console games are third person. I can't stand third person games. It is more a contest of "how many times can I fall into this pit before I smash the controller through the television". Sure there are easy settings where it aims for you, but what's the point. I may as well fire up the Atari and play Pac-Man.

Oh yeah, and "combos." More like "mash the controller until the enemy dies" but this is the same argument of KB&M being a far superior controller.

Don't a lot of games restrict access to parts till you meed some requirements?

Yeah, it's a growing trend that is inherently stupid. You shouldn't have to unlock anything in a competitive multiplayer game. Well, I don't mind purely aesthetic unlocks like decals and skins since those have no impact on game balance. But unlockable weapons/gear/perks are just inherently unbalanced. Unlockable maps don't really affect balance but if I'm paying for a multiplayer game, I should have immediate access to every map.

Publishers/developers are relying way too heavily on operant conditioning to keep people playing their games. They should focus on making deeper, more compelling gameplay that actually warrant longer lifespans.

It could be worse. They could be making us pay for it.

No, probably not. But it is just another spit in the face to PC users who always get short changed when it comes to gaming.

For once we work for something and get it before console kiddies and then they just get it handed to them.

Necro, I feel the same way but don't forget that the pendulum always seems to swing between $$$$$ and 'innovation'. It's just a matter of time and I think that a compromise between keyboard/mouse and gamepad/joystick will make PC and console versions of a game the same and end the madness.
Will it be motion, speech recognition, touch, neural implants??? I don't know, I just think we are near to finding a user interface that will work for everything including PC and Console games.
Hope this helps you feel better

Battlefield: Bad Company - Vietnam Hastings unlocked for all.
I guess all the console kiddies cried loud and hard that the 'evil' PC people unlocked it first.

From a post on their blog that sums things up:

According to the numbers of hours played on each platform (360 and PS3 are both double that of the PC), I would find it safe to assume that there are MORE players, either that or they just play more. Either way one can conclude the teamwork point/minute ratio is much lower than that of the PC. I am not sure where you got your statistic.

It not that we feel more entitled than you console gamers, it simply that we EARNED the map. It was presented by DICE as a "race" to reach 69 million teamwork points where once the finish line was crossed, the participant (or platform) would receive the map. It was not stated that EVERYONE would receive the map. We simply feel cheated in that we had to work for our prize while you console gamers did not. It is that simple. Don't turn it into something more than it is. Now had they combined the point total for all 3 platforms and then given it to everyone when the points were reached, I am sure no one would be complaining.

I still feel that this picture applies however: http://resource.mmgn.com/Gallery/normal/7PLLYLB8.jpg
