Yeah I bought Conan just because of that. I did the same thing with LOTRO; bought the game for like $3, played solidly for a month, moved on.

Mafia with all the DLC 75% off is looking very appealing.

There's zero fucking reason to play Settlers, Anno (Dawn of Discovery) is 100x the game Settlers ever was.
They are different games though. I still have yet to see if settlers 7 is anything like the classic settlers ones. The latest couple settlers turned me off the series, I wanted stuff more like the classic gameplay. When they went to 3d (I think it started with settlers 4 or 5) they also screwed the gameplay.
The classic one was more building the economic chains and road system and not having direct control over what the people do (but using demand sliders), having to hunt for gold and then attack your neighbor

Edit:
I just checked, dawn of discovery is ubisoft anyway. Probably with their crazy DRM too.

Crysis Wars CD Key Jan 2, 2011, 11:48
Jan 2, 2011, 11:48

Hey there - a quick warning for you guys: be careful if like I did you plan to buy Crysis Wars over Steam in this sale. I bought it for the Mechwarrior Living Legends mod, but the CD Key from Steam is refused by all servers! The Steam and EA support forums have a growing list of people in the same situation - I suspect the problem is systematic.

I simply can't play my purchase and there's no response to my support ticket yet. Some people on the forums have persevered with support and a couple have even been provided with a working EADM copy from EA's goodwill(!) although of course it also needed to be downloaded. There is no direct solution or word from Steam as yet. If you are planning to make this purchase I strongly advise that you check out the Steam and EA support forums to see if this is resolved before going ahead.

I posted a question late yesterday about Amazon Game Downloads. I bought ArmA 2: Combined Ops from Amazon, which downloaded what looks to be the contents of the retail DVD. It installed just like it was retail, and does not require a disk or connection to play. I don't think the retail version of ArmA 2 requires the disk to be in the drive anyway (it didn't with ArmA), so I'm wondering how it works for other games that would normally require a disk to play.

I'm considering buying GTA: IV and EFLC while they're on sale even though I own both on disk. My disk #1 for GTA: IV got scratched when my DVD drive crapped out and ejected it while it was spinning at full speed. It still recognizes the disk to launch the game, but I can't re-install the game because it won't read parts of it. If the GTA: IV from Amazon download works like ArmA 2, the sale price is worth it to me to be able to play them without having to get out the disk or being connected to Steam.

I love talking to myself. I answered my own question. I went ahead and took a $5 chance on GTA: IV, since my disk is damaged already. It downloaded the contents of what would be on the game disk, installed like it would if I had the disk, launches without needing a disk or connecting to a service (except the stupid SecuROM activation that you have to do with the disk version too).

I think I have found my new preferred digital download service. All the benefits of buying a retail disk, without the disk.

FC2 definitely has Punkbuster, as I remember I couldn't play online at release because of a compatibility issue with Vista 64bit. As for the multiplayer - it had a huge amount of potential but the game interface and dominance of snipers destroyed it. Real shame.

Still, if anyone doesn't have it already then they should definitely pick it up. Despite the issues it's still a very good game and I put more time into than most shooters.

Vietnam surely is no sniper fest. Or do you count the abuse of the AK-74 as sniping?

I thought it did. I was once refused trying to join a sever with a PB message but sure enough I don't see it now either. *shrug* I had to run PB and update the FC2 definitions but now I'm not seeing it. Very odd. Maybe I'm remembering a parallel universe where FC2 uses PB.

Since you already have the game why are we having this discussion? You can play it whenever you want. It's good in MP. Single player has good moments but can be frustrating too.

It uses Punkbuster so in theory it will get regular updates. I think one server I was on was taking regular screenshots (half second lockups while that happens) so it looks like some servers do check for hacks. (iirc, Crysis/Warhead has no anti-cheat system)

I'm having a lot more fun with Farcry 2's multiplayer than I expected. Plays great, less filling, and lots of well made community maps. Glad I picked it up.
Better than Crysis' multiplayer modes?

Well not as comprehensive but I think I'll enjoy it more. Crysis has MP modes over big maps and the nice weapon purchase system. The problem with Crysis MP is that it's full of hax/exploits and Crytek did nothing about it. Also Crysis performs poorly and an MP game, imo, needs 60+fps to play well. Farcry 2 on my 5870 gives me a steady 60+fps even with 4xAA. When I played MP Crysis/Warhead I saw a LOT of rubber banding.

FC2 is not trying to be BF2 as Crysis did, but more of just an infantry focused MP game. There are vehicles you can drive but they are mostly just to get around.

The community maps the servers use are great and they download very fast. A big problem with FC2 MP is that there's no server browser. The game picks the server for you. It does a good job usually, but sometimes joins an empty server (maybe because no one is playing that game mode?). The player movement is nicely smooth and the animations aren't jerky so it's not like I'm shooting at people dancing around. The body movement says, sort of, where they are moving. If that makes sense.. I saw no rubber banding.

If you like MP FPS, FC2 is definitely worth $5, or even $10. My opinion.
