Yeah...as huge of a fan I am of the Fallout series (1+2 more than 3 or FO:T), I also know Obsidian. I think the earliest I'll pick up New Vegas is at the Christmas sale, and even then, I'm prepared for a rocky experience. I get the feeling that they could use an experienced project lead from some other company, have them come in and observe one game's development cycle then step in on the next one and keep Obsidian on track. Their games are some of my favorites, but I hate having to dig through so much rough to get to the diamond, especially when they seem to screw up the same way every time.

Actually, going by the patch notes, getting it on a christmas sale is just about the right time since I think this is the major patch that fixes the majority of the biggest stuff. This patch is also the first one for consoles, and those have requirements from MS and stuff, so they presumably put a good amount of work into getting the main console patch working well.
BTW, most of the bugs have workarounds, there's a wiki that has tons of workarounds and console commands. I personally have not hit any showstoppers. The main thing that annoyed me was knockback perk requires unarmed skill of 90 to get, but it also gives knockback to melee weapons. It should be unarmed OR melee skill 90. So I console generated a bunch of unarmed skill books (I also could have used the editor to make a mini mod to change the perk I suppose). I don't feel its cheating since this character is a pure melee character and I'll not be using any unarmed stuff.

most bugs have workarounds? come on this is a pretty buggy game is it not? whether it's super fps slow downs in tight quarters, or quests bugging out on u, it's still a pita, that shouldn't be. you'd figure there'd be not too much work involved, fo3 was reskinned oblivion, now vegas is a modded fo3, and much less deep than fo3 was in terms of overall quality(music, textures, vo) it's still a good game, but it's a $25 special at best. 1/2 assed effort = 1/2 price to me or less.

I'm pretty sure this is a troll attempt but I'll bite anyway. New Vegas has more (and better) music, more dialogue, more quests, more weapons, more equipment, more enemies, more systems and just more content overall than FO3 ever had. In addition, the quality of the writing is leagues better than FO3 and most of the quests have multiple paths. There are many more possible endings and they are all more substantial than what you got in FO3. The game also has much better balancing.

FO:NV is well worth $50, with or without the bugs. Now that this patch is out, there's no reason whatsoever not to buy FO:NV if you like RPGs.

Wow. I'm surprised to hear that from you. You are notoriously fussy about CRPG's. But FWIW, I agree.

I got it for 20 bucks off on a D2D sale. Who says only Steam does great sales?

Patch is downloading now, but I just started Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, so I think Mr House will have to wait for his chip for a few more weeks.

This is all true, but it has not more nor even remotely comparable mods. For some reason lots of the really good FO3 modders do not touch NV.

And what peeves me incredibly - the GUI mods are still years away from FO3 quality. Maybe its because NVSE is still sort of in development.

What GUI mods are you referring to? DarnifiedUI is back and that's pretty much all I needed in FO3 and FO:NV.

And yes, FO3 has more mods. It's also been out a lot longer than FO:NV. Give it time. There are already a lot of great mods out for NV.

more quantity doesn't make it better, style, substance, and atmosphere do, fo3 had more of the last 3.

Uh, yeah? FO:NV has only been out a few months. Why would it have mods superior to a game that's been out for years? A lot of the same modders are in both camps if you bother to check the forums, but it's still going to be 6 months or so before the bigger mods start to trickle out.

It has some scripting issues but for the most part there aren't many "serious" bugs left in the game after the first round of patches. It's well worth the money and a fantastic game.

First, REALLY nice avatar.

Second, TOTALLY agree on the music. They brought back a lot of the atmospherics from both Fallout 2 AND Fallout Tactics. Love it!

Third -- and I find the discussion on this point intriguing -- I simply don't enjoy NV as much as 3. I haven't been able to put my finger on it exactly, but it's just not as... engaging?... fun... to me. It's good, and I'm glad I got it, but I disagree pretty strongly that it's better than 3. I've played 3 through about 10 times. I'm already bored in the second playthrough on NV.

i think one of the best parts about fallout 2 and now fallout nv was the "cross-talk" between factions, how the different areas and groups related to each other and the overlapping quests and so on.. this is non-existent in fallout 3, because its incredibly fragmented - like a bunch of instanced adventures on a big map. new vegas is cohesive as a world AND a story, plus it ties in to all the previous history in a fucking cool way

fallout 3 was weird and definitely seemed more like an homage than an actual part of the series

I'm surprised to hear someone who likes FO2 say this. I find the story in NV much more intriguing, and the moral ambiguity built into some conversation options much more like the first. The sense of humor is back, as is...for lack of a better term...the grittiness.

I absolutely despised the plot in 3, and disliked the ease with which I received a stronghold, as well as Megaton being an obvious dropping off point. I felt like Fallout 3 wanted to remove the need for you to know the lay of the land when trying to find particular items or knowing where to go for services. New Vegas brought both of those things back.

I can certainly understand enjoying 3 -- even though I disliked it as a Fallout RPG, I did play through the game twice. For me, Fallout 3 was a great game, but a lousy Fallout game. To each his (or her) own, though.

I just purchased the FO3 Game of the Year Edition for $29.99 with all the DLC, so far I LOVE the game. I will probably do the same for FO3-NV when it reaches the same.
