Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Released, Shift 2 Announced

EA announces that Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is now available in North American stores for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, saying: "One of the most exciting parts of Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is the innovative feature we like to call Autolog. It allows you to connect, compare and compete with your friends. It keeps the competition between you and friends at the heart of the game." The announcement includes this trailer showing off the game. Not wasting any time, they also announce Shift 2 Unleashed, an upcoming sequel for Need for Speed SHIFT that for some reason will not be using the Need for Speed part of the title (though we predict it will be added back at a future date when this is identified as a tactical error). The game is due in Spring 2011 for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, and here is how it's being described: "SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED features an all-new rendering engine with a massive graphics overhaul that puts the player in the heart of the racing action. With an innovative helmet camera view simulating the physical experience of driving at 200mph, the thrilling experience of night racing and authentic degradation of tracks and cars, this is tomorrow’s sim for today’s adrenaline fueled racer. SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED also incorporates the next generation of Need for Speed Autolog - the groundbreaking network that connects friends for epic head-to-head races and compares player stats for the ultimate social racing competition." This trailer accompanies the announcement, a stylized clip that brings to mind a demolition derby. The embedded version follows.

And I wouldn't want any mix of HP and Shift, each one seems promising for its niche.

The best NFS games were the ones that were well-balanced between arcade and sim. NFS: High Stakes and Porsche Unleashed, for example. Hot Pursuit goes way too far towards arcade, with an extremely simplistic damage system, no tuning or customization, completely unrealistic physics, ridiculous weapons, etc. Conversely, SHIFT goes too far in the sim direction, with closed, official tracks and sanctioned race cars.

The ideal NFS needs these things:

1) Good balance between arcade and sim physics.
2) Detailed damage model.
3) Detailed customization and tuning.
4) Exotic and unique tracks around the world.
5) Racing on the open road, complete with traffic, police, etc.
6) Exotic sports cars.

Hot Pursuit satisfies some of those requirements while SHIFT satisfies others. We need a game that satisfies them all.

I just completed NFS: High Stakes, and I suggest anyone who is interested in this new hot pursuit to do like I did instead as you will undoubtedly have a much more fun experience, especially if you never played it in the past. Just search for the NFS HS Stock Pack to install it on XP or later. Still works just fine with today's directinput wheel and gamepads.

High Stakes was fucking AWESOME. That and Porsche Unleashed were two of the best of the series.

With an innovative helmet camera view simulating the physical experience of driving at 200mph

..Wait for it,(194mph) Wait for it...,(199mph)...

and so, we thank the brave soul who lost his life, but gave EA such innovation to unleash NFS into a new era of game play.

As much as I commend NFS and EA for making SHIFT 1 a decent driving experience for my PS3 paired with a G25, (and my 2 yr old Godson completing a Laguna Seca Lap in record slow time),
I sincerely hope, that Shift2 will not be Hotpursuit-reskinned, as obviously, and sadly, that was a fail of a NFS game. Can't get em all right there EA, carry on.

I can't help but equate this 'Autolog' thing to their ill-fated C&C DRM. The game will undoubtedly require a persistent net connection to even work and resale won't happen.

*sigh*

It's like you're not even driving a car, but some brick inside a pinball machine. I dunno how else to describe it

I know exactly what you're referring to, though to me it's more like trying to sail a boat on open land.

Another bit of silliness: Hot Pursuit doesn't even have an option to select auto or manual transmission even though there's an RPM meter and gear number displayed on the HUD.

As long as Shift 2 is equally simmy as the first, it'll be decent. Mods certainly helped Shift1 so apply same to Shift2 as needed.

A AAA full out car enthusiast game ala Forza or Gran Turismo would be great on PC but no one seems to have the stones to do it.

I've never understood why people like this franchise. Whateve blows your hair back, I guess.

I really wish they had combined the physics and driving experience of SHIFT with the scenery, exotic cars and street racing of Hot Pursuit. Hot Pursuit looks way too arcadey, with cars having health bars, nitrous, magical handling, etc.

I'm also waiting for this, but alas, it'll never come.

The new Hot Pursuit is beyond arcadey. It's like you're not even driving a car, but some brick inside a pinball machine. I dunno how else to describe it, but it definitely doesn't feel like a car.

No idea what some people complain. If their new helmet camera view is one of the major innovations, this teaser did a good job to focus on the short distance surroundings and impressions.

Exactly when did we start naming sequels with the same name as a previous game? God, that annoys me.

Eh? I thought the trailer stunk. Don't want artsy fartsy, show me gameplay.

I'll still be buying this cause Shift was a great sim/arcade mix. Loved it.
